We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Oscar Roberts. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Oscar below.
Alright, Oscar thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I am Oscar Leroy Roberts, great-grandson of Joseph Jenkins Roberts, Liberia’s first president. It is both humbling and empowering to carry the legacy of a man who not only led a nation to independence but also laid the groundwork for its economic and cultural growth. Today, I feel an unyielding responsibility to build upon his foundation, adapting his vision to address the challenges of our era.
Joseph Jenkins Roberts, born free in Norfolk, Virginia, journeyed to Liberia with his family in 1829. As a merchant-turned-politician, he recognized the power of commerce and governance to uplift his community. His ability to navigate the complexities of leadership during Liberia’s infancy inspires my current mission to intertwine art, agriculture, and technology for the betterment of Liberia and beyond. His leadership and vision laid the foundation for Liberia’s independence, and his unwavering commitment to commerce and community continues to inspire my work. Joseph Jenkins Roberts believed in the power of unity and development to elevate a nation—and this philosophy shapes everything I do today.
The legacy of my great-grandfather informs my mission at the Roberts Liberian Liberties Foundation (RLL). Just as Joseph Jenkins Roberts championed the growth of Liberia, my work with RLL is focused on creating sustainable opportunities for communities both in Liberia and the United States. By fusing art, agriculture, and technology, we are cultivating a future where creativity thrives, and communities are empowered to grow in harmony. Through artist residencies, regenerative farms, and innovation hubs, we are building a bridge between local empowerment and global collaboration, turning vision into reality.
For me, this journey is not just about honoring history—it’s about creating a future that echoes the dreams of my ancestor. Joseph Jenkins Roberts envisioned a prosperous Liberia, and through the work we’re doing today, I’m committed to keeping that dream alive, passing it on to future generations. The Roberts Liberian Liberties Foundation is my brainchild, born from a deep desire to empower communities by connecting art, agriculture, and technology. We believe in the power of collaboration and innovation to transform lives and create sustainable futures. Through artist residencies, regenerative farms, and tech hubs, we provide the resources and opportunities for creativity, food security, and entrepreneurship to flourish.
