We recently connected with Elizabeth Dixon and have shared our conversation below.
Elizabeth, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
I started Altar Space as a side gig in 2019 while I was working full time for another company. It was a big dream that I couldn’t imagine growing this fast. I was working from home in my free time and eventually, I left the job I had by divine forces. Within a year, I was operating out of an office at a co-working facility. In 2020, my online orders really picked up and allowed me to grow into a separate office space outside of my home. By dedicating myself full time to my business, the energy grew and I had more opportunities than I could keep up with- but I tried! I worked every single day (and still rarely take a whole day off). After almost a year at the co-working office, I was presented with an opportunity to open a storefront downtown New Braunfels, Texas. I jumped in with everything I had and worked several long weeks to push for a quick open date. I’ve had to hire help along the way in order to pull it all off and continue to grow. It’s been a lot of trial and error. There is no cookie cutter approach to creating a business. I was willing to get my hands dirty and let the inspiration come. As my team formed, it allowed space for me to expand my product line and offerings. There have been many obstacles along the way that have invited me to transform in ways I could not have anticipated – spiritually and mentally. Even though I did go to school for business, nothing could have prepared me for this journey and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been working with crystals and semi-precious stones since I was about 7 years old. It started out with making beaded jewelry as a hobby and as I got older, I worked in the jewelry industry for over 12 years. I’ve done silversmithing, laser welding jewelry repairs, appraisals, trade shows, and taught classes on jewelry making. It always came back to the healing power of the gems and minerals I worked with for me. That was my true calling. I decided to focus in on my life long passion and build my business around what I loved and cared about the most, spiritual healing. My journey to find my own healing started when I was a teenager and started therapy. Over the years, it evolved into holistic wellness and I never looked back. I am now a certified life coach and reiki master. I see clients one-on-one and I help customers find crystals at my shop to assist them with whatever they’re working on in life at that moment. I also speak at retreats about crystals and energy and I set up at artisan markets in the Austin area. I love working with people to get to the root of their obstacles so they can breakthrough to a happier way of life.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn a scarcity mindset that I learned growing up. It’s a make-it or break-it pattern that needs to go if you want to have a successful business. I first had to love myself enough to believe that I was worthy of living my wildest dreams, This was not an overnight matter. It was a process of self-discovery that came before I even had the courage to start my business. I had to consciously decide that I had what it takes to effectively run a business and commit to dedicating my time and energy to it every day. There are still hard days but it builds my trust with the universe over and over again to show up and never give up.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Consistency and intention behind my posts helped me build my social media presence. I have fun with it and it pushes me to step outside my comfort zone. I like to offer a mix of educational posts and some funny reels. My intent is to come off as approachable and supportive to my community. It was a slow build for the first few years and then all of a sudden, my community grew almost overnight. This was unexpected and can feel intimidating at times but I embrace it and I am very grateful for the engagement because it keeps me going and inspired to know that so many people support my life’s mission.
