We were lucky to catch up with Nataly Alvarez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nataly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I’ve decided to start my own press on nail business! As a lover of all things art and creative, I feel it is what is perfect for me. I’ve been in the fashion industry for years now and I loved being around style and trends , but I now see how that industry no longer aligns with me. I am currently a full time mom and I’ve been soaking up every minute of it. I’ve been very busy with my almost one year old that I hadn’t been able to check in with myself and what I would want to do with my career moving forward. Going back into a workplace and leaving my daughter for a job I don’t love is simply not an option. I wanted to figure out what I could do that I would enjoy and hopefully bring in some extra money for my family. If you follow me, you know that I do my own gel nails. It has been a hobby of mine for about 5 years and I truly love having my nails done. I love nails, style, accessories, art, and all colorful fun things. Once I thought of my own press on business, I couldn’t stop thinking about how it perfectly aligns with me and my new mom identity. I will be starting this new venture January 2025 and I will be doing it scared and all while taking a risk!
Nataly, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I last worked for Miss Lola as a photo editor. I was there for about 5 years and though I liked being in a style/ fashion environment, the toxic workplace took a huge toll in my mental health and overall confidence. I’ve always loved to draw and create art. I’ve especially loved digital art because of how versatile it can be. I started doing my nails as a creative outlet and honestly to save money on getting my nails done that I barely liked. I combined my love for art and having my nails done and it has been so fulfilling that I truly believe it is my calling. I haven’t taken the risk just yet, but I am actively working on setting things in motion. I am so excited (and nervous) to launch!🙌🏼
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being able to express myself and my creativity has always been a dream. It’s not easy doing that at a job that doesn’t believe in you, so this new venture will meet my creative goal for now.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think a lot of people may think that I just want to do artsy things that don’t look like a career or serious job but I almost take pride in that because it takes a special mind to be creative. It is a literal skill!
