Today we’d like to introduce you to Clare Watt
Hi Clare, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
For the past year I’ve been working and living in New York. Working at a commercial gallery in Chelsea, in addition to managing exhibitions and installs, I’ve continued my art practice on the side. I’ve successfully curated and exhibited in a number of shows in the city and in Upstate New York, and more recently I’ve just completed my first artist residency at ChaNorth.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Securing opportunities to show my art. As a practising artist getting a show in a gallery or space is an opportunity that doesn’t come often, only when you’ve become recognised in the art world do these offers start rolling in.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The majority of the work I create is collage based. My work is focused on the idea of anemoia, which is a feeling of nostalgia of a time you never knew or experienced. I create work using a specific magazine from the 1970’s which focuses on art and architecture. I’ve almost put myself limitations on my work because I’m so specific about using this discontinued magazine, which I have to source at auctions and on Ebay. I cut out various pieces and then reconstruct new images based on these pieces – almost making my own reality from a time in the past.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I can be contacted via my instagram for any future projects or collaborations .
