Today we’d like to introduce you to Grier Spry
Hi Grier, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey into branding and multidisciplinary design began with a passion for creativity and storytelling. While studying advertising with a minor in graphic design at Howard University, I discovered my love for crafting strategic visuals that truly resonate with people. After graduating, I balanced a 9-to-5 job with freelancing, exploring various aspects of the industry and experimenting with styles to uncover what inspired me most.
Over the years, I’ve honed my expertise by focusing on purpose-driven brands in industries that align with my personal interests, such as hospitality, tourism, real estate, and nonprofits. From freelancing full-time to partnering with ad agencies as a contract brand designer or collaborating with nonprofits as a brand manager, I’ve gained extensive experience in brand strategy and design, digital marketing, and experiential marketing. Whether it’s creating bold visual identities or immersive augmented reality experiences, I’m passionate about helping brands stand out while remaining true to their mission.
It’s been a rewarding journey, and I look forward to continuing to collaborate with organizations dedicated to making a meaningful impact in the world.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think we can all agree, the journey of a freelancer is never smooth, and that includes me. It’s been full of valuable learning moments—stepping out of my comfort zone, designing beyond my usual style, and adapting to the unique needs of different clients and industries. There were also times when work was inconsistent, which can be tough to navigate, but I’ve been fortunate to almost always have another job to supplement my income.
This stability has given me the freedom to be selective with the projects I take on and the businesses I collaborate with, allowing me to focus on work that truly aligns with my passions and values. These experiences have not only shaped me as a designer but also taught me the importance of flexibility, resilience, and staying true to what inspires me.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work revolves around creating meaningful connections through strategy and design. I specialize in branding, large-format design, augmented reality filters, and experiential marketing. I’m known for crafting immersive experiences that help brands not only stand out visually but also connect with their audiences on a deeper, more impactful level. Whether it’s developing bold visual identities, designing augmented reality experiences, or branding large-scale events, I’m passionate about bringing a brand’s story to life in unique and engaging ways.
What I’m most proud of is my ability to align my work with the missions and values of the brands I collaborate with. Seeing how thoughtful design can help a business thrive while staying true to its purpose is incredibly rewarding. What sets me apart is my approach—going beyond aesthetics to uncover what makes a brand truly unique and finding creative ways to amplify that message. My work isn’t just about creating visuals; it’s about crafting lasting connections and unique experiences that genuinely resonate with your target audience.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
As someone who travels frequently and works remotely in different cities, I find myself returning to LA often. What I love most about the city—aside from the beautiful weather, of course—is the abundance of opportunities. There’s a unique energy here where chance encounters can turn into something meaningful. Whether it’s meeting someone who owns a business or discovering a project that aligns with my work, LA seems to naturally foster connections and collaboration, which is incredibly inspiring.
What I like least, though, is the traffic—it’s no secret that getting around can be a challenge. However, I’ve found that the city’s creative and entrepreneurial spirit more than makes up for it, and it’s a small trade-off for everything LA has to offer.
