Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexander Hume
Hi Alexander, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My obsession with A/V engineering began in my early years. The lore goes deep but here’s a fun little story:
Equipped with a Firewire audio interface (who remembers Firewire here?) lent to me by my Dad, I spent countless hours recording my voice with an awful microphone and my guitar plugged directly into the interface, no amplifier. I also made lots of covers of electronic artists like Daft Punk and bands like System Of A Down who I was into at the time. Let’s just say this: Oof. I found a CD of some of my songs recently and I’m surprised my parents didn’t give me an intervention…
But I’m glad they didn’t!
Every day I wake up and get to do what I love for a living. I’ve worked with a diverse range of clients, from up-and-coming independent artists to established names in the music industry. My work spans nearly every genre and my reputation for versatility and innovation has made me a sought-after individual for all kinds of projects, from mastering and mixing to sound design and full production services. I’ve become a trusted partner for esteemed labels, forward-thinking companies, and independent artists looking to craft standout experiences. This year I became part of the Recording Academy PNW Chapter and I’m very excited about it!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest obstacle for me has been getting burnt out. The whole “do what you love, it doesn’t feel like work” thing is true to an extent, but I’ve realized it’s extremely important to manage your time well. I can easily stay up until 6 AM working on a mix (and still do sometimes). That said I’ve found that getting a proper amount of sleep, exercising, and eating healthy are crucial to my physical and mental wellbeing. I know that might be obvious to some reading this, but to put it in perspective I could easily stay in my studio forever when I have things to work on.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an A/V engineer and producer who specializes in music, particularly electronic and alternative.
My determination to grow is what sets me apart from others. I’m not the kind of creative that can get too comfortable – I love to learn new things and I’m constantly scouring the internet for new information as well as querying my mentors and inspirations.
I may be an engineer and producer, but I’m also a musician who has their own artist project, EMUH. This experience and insight allows me to consult my clients about the industry and cross-pollinate my skills across technical and creative aspects. I have a strong background in performance which also helps me in my role as a producer when I guide performers to optimize their impact.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Seattle is my favorite American city, we have amazing nature, art, and food here. I do wish our winters weren’t as cold and dark – but I’ll take that any day to be fortunate enough to walk a short while bundled up to eat a delicious bánh mì, see a show, or go to the beach – I’ve seen a lot of great shows in Seattle over the years! This year I’ve been really getting into theatre (literally too, as I’ve been doing some contract jobs at one) and it’s been an awesome reminder of what a thriving theatre scene we have. In my teens I was immersed in theatre, dance, and musicals, so it’s been great rekindling that flame.
On the topic of food (I’m a Taurus so I’m very food-focused), I think Northwest Seattle could really use some more variety in our cheap late night food options! If you know any good spots, let me know. It seems like at least once a week I’m hungry at 3 AM after a long mixing session and nothing decent is open.
