Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Beppu.
Hi Samantha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my journey as an energy worker by volunteering my time at a local metaphysical shop. They hosted a healing clinic one evening a week where people could come in and receive Reiki and other energy healing modalities by donation. I would provide Reiki and sound healing every week as a way to give to my community and also develop my skills.
As time went on, I began to build a clientele and started to receive invitations from other organizations to participate in their events and fundraisers.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say it has been fairly smooth. There are, of course, frustrations and anxieties in owning a business. There are a lot of things to figure out when it comes to logistics and finances. I also struggled with deciding how to market myself.
I was advised by one of my death doula mentors not to advertise that I am a Reiki practitioner, as that may be a deterrent to certain demographics of people. This was difficult for me, as Reiki is a huge part of my life and who I strive to be as a person. It felt unnatural to separate my spirituality from my work, and made me feel that I was presenting an unauthentic version of myself to people that I truly wanted to help and connect with.
I eventually decided that I was going to work within alignment of what felt right to myself and I have met some spectacular people and built wonderful working and also personal relationships.
As you know, we’re big fans of Mindful Passage LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a Certified Death Doula, Reiki Master Teacher, and CMA Certified Sound Healer. I also carry additional education and certifications in Medical Aid in Dying, Pet Death Doula, and Animal Reiki.
As a Death Doula, I offer emotional, spiritual, and physical support as an individual labors out of this life. I offer companion care, medical advocacy, and support in the individual’s right to choose and curate a “good death”. My support extends to loved ones and the care team. I assist with end of life planning, after care, funeral and celebration of life arrangements, legacy projects, and offer to sit vigil during active transition.
As a Reiki practitioner, I combine Reiki and sound healing in all of my sessions. I also teach Reiki classes in an effort to make this beautiful and gentle form of energy healing accessible to as many people as possible. My work is genuine, heart centered, and I believe that my clients feel this when we work together. I am very intentional and in love with what I do.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I have learned so far is to work in a way that is authentic to myself and to respect my mind and body when they are asking for a break. I lived so long with the work ethic that was handed down to me, and while I am grateful that it paved the way for my family to be successful when they immigrated to this country, it was running me into the ground.
Due to years as a single mother and several abusive and traumatic relationships, I eventually realized that I was in burn out and had hit a wall. In order to recover and be successful in what I love doing, I had to make some significant lifestyle changes, as well as learn to actually care for myself.
Learning to be unapologetically me and take the resources that I need to be healthy has been a long road but definitely contribute to where I stand today.
