We were lucky to catch up with Scotty Jordan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Scotty , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
I started my brand broncoboyzatl almost 4 years ago. I’ve always been obsessed with vintage tees such as tour shirts, nascar, wrestling and band tees. I always had visions in my head and always was very fashionable winning best dresses throughout school people gravitate towards me and always complemented me on how i would dress but i never thought about having my own clothing brand. I always had dope ideas looking at shirts in my closet for hours visualizing on how i would put together a shirt or what would make it better or stand out and wanted to bring those ideas to life but was scared to share them until i met my business partner Roderick Austin through my photographer Bmars. We linked and designed our first shirts and the response i got back from something i never imagined and from that point forward the sky was the limit. we have been creating timeless pieces for the past few years each design gets better and challenges us and push us to new heights on each collection we put out to the public. All my ideas come from my child hood obsessions and what inspires me today or current events. I travel a lot and love going to different places to get inspiration on what people are into. I always visioned my brand to be universal not just to be for one crowd of people but for everybody older, younger it doesn’t matter. I wanted my pieces to be to bold and able to reach every race and age of life. A lifestyle brand.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
How did i get into the industry? I would like to say off my visions. I always knew i wanted to do something creative i always stood out in crowds and was always different. Whatever i did people would gravitate towards me or wanted to be apart of it. So having those special powers to have people wanting to be apart of whatever i did and having great taste in fashion i took a leap of faith in creating my brand and giving the world an insight into my world and things I’m into. As i stated before i wanted my brand to be universal to any and everybody black, white, Asian it didn’t matter i wanted it to be Something for everybody to love. One thing i do love about my brand is i always get stopped and asked while I’m out in some of my merch is “what is bronco Boyz” i wanted my pieces to start a conversation cause that Curiosity brings customers and buildings the brand. I get asked a lot about business and how to keep it going and my main response is always to be passionate about whatever you do. The money will come but what’s most important is having a team on the same page, having discipline and setting goals. This industry is very competitive you look around and it’s somebody starting a brand everyday. The key focus is to always make sure your brand stand out never blend in set your brand apart from others do things different and do it YOUR way. that’s what separates you from everybody else cause it can be challenging. One week sales might be up the next month it might be slow. But always have hustle, grind and ambition that along will take you far as you wanna go in this industry.. I’m coming up on my 4th year and I’ve enjoyed every second of this ride. This past year i started offering a service i provide is making shirts for different businesses. Restaurants, small business, barbershops etc to express more of my creative side and to service my community in return and it’s been fun to help bring others vision to life.
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
One of my favorite sales stories has to be this piece we created featuring David Ruffin from the legendary Motown record label The Temptations. As i stated before a lot of my inspirations come from my childhood. I always thought David Ruffin was a dope guy, how he dressed carried himself and his attitude, but in the movie he was looked upon as the outkast and cocky guy. So with this i got the idea do some David Ruffin merch. We came up with a dope design and how we would tie dye parts of the hoodie. We knew it was a dope concept but how the people would take it was what made us take a risk. Everybody don’t know who David Ruffin is. It’s one of those things “if you know you know” but we took a chance delivered a timeless piece of work and it became our highest selling piece till today. We sold out in less then 36hrs of officially dropping. It did so well we did another release and the numbers on sales doubled the first release. A lot of work tie dying over 100+ hands by hands but so much fun in seeing so many people love your art. It made it worth the while. Always trust and believe in what you do!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
A time in business where we had to pivot probably had to be during the pandemic. It was scary. I remember thinking like how are we going to make it through this? Everything was getting shut down, people were losing jobs it was just a scary time for everything and definitely business. But i looked around and started to see a demand for face mask. So i thought ok if everybody needs a mask and they’re Mandatory that builds demand. I got the idea to release our own branded face mask started with one black mask and then varieties. With the mask bringing in some revenue we Continued to release merch and survived the pandemic era! It’s always good to know how to adopt. Seeing what’s around you that is a demand and can provide service for people! Never be scared to switch it up and try something you haven’t before!
