We recently connected with Merril Cledera and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Merril, thanks for joining us today. Do you have any thoughts about how to create a more inclusive workplace?
In my experience, creating an inclusive workplace starts with ensuring that different voices are truly heard. Early in my career, I worked on a team where only certain contributions were valued, often due to invisible biases. This stifled creativity and collaboration—a lesson that has stayed with me.
When I started Oden Studio, I made it a point to focus on inclusivity by building a design team with diverse backgrounds—culturally, professionally, and personally. These differences bring unique perspectives that make our work more meaningful and deliver better results for our clients. At the heart of this approach is creating a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas and knows their contributions matter. Every idea, big or small, has value, and recognizing that makes all the difference.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
With over a decade of experience in branding and graphic/visual design, I’ve worked with brands of all sizes across industries like beauty & wellness, food/beverage, and media & entertainment. This experience has shaped me into an award-winning graphic designer and creative director, combining strategic thinking with bold, unforgettable design.
Oden Studio, or simply ‘Oden,’ is my design practice focused on strategic branding, visual identities, packaging, and digital design. Beyond the creative work, one core principle I’ve built into Oden is creating opportunities for emerging talent from different backgrounds. I believe representation matters—not just in the work we produce but in who’s behind it. By bringing different perspectives together, we create brands and products that deeply resonate with people.
What I’m most proud of is Oden’s dedication to mentorship. Guiding talented individuals as they develop and thrive in their careers has been one of the most fulfilling parts of this experience.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is two-fold. The first is to put outstanding design into the world, creating work that is not just visually beautiful but also meaningful and functional. For example, packaging isn’t just about holding a product; it can brighten up a space or add a little joy and excitement to someone’s day.
The second part of my mission is about elevating others. At Oden, we don’t just create—we shape. We shape young and diverse talents into creative professionals who can stand out in a competitive space. Helping them grow and giving them a solid foundation is really important to me. Every step we take is about creating meaningful change—not just in branding but in the industry as a whole.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part for me is solving complicated problems in a visual way. I love taking abstract ideas and turning them into something real that everyone—whether they’re creatives or non-creatives—can connect with and understand.
Every project we create feels like a little piece of us coming to life, and there’s nothing better than seeing our designs out there making a difference. Whether it’s a product on a shelf or a brand that someone interacts with every day, knowing we’ve made someone’s experience better is a great feeling.
It’s also fulfilling to think about leaving behind a bit of inspiration. Even one simple design element has the potential to spark curiosity or bring a thrilling moment. At the end of the day, that’s what keeps me passionate about what I do—making a difference in ways people may never expect but always appreciate.
