We recently connected with Alexandria Hall and have shared our conversation below.
Alexandria, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I just recently painted a large wall in Nashville, TN for a lovely family that wanted to commission a mural to honor their daughter that had passed away. The family was so kind and showed such a respect for the artwork we were making that it brought a new sense of perspective to my own work. We worked together for 6 months creating a design that embodied the vibrant and unique sprit of their daughter and what she loved the most. After two months of painting we had a celebration of life ceremony at the mural unveiling and so many people who either knew the family or lived in the area came out to show support. During the ceremony so many people spoke to me about how the mural being here in their community brought them so much joy and peace, their statements brought me the deepest and most touching experience I’ve had as an artist. As dramatic as it may sound that project truly changed my life and gave me an almost spiritual connection to my work and the power of what we muralists can really do for the people around us. That fundamental connection had begun to fade over the years of hard working, but I’m so thankful to have had a chance to remember what painting is really all about for me.
Alexandria, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a muralist and illustrator currently living and working in LA. Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, I made the
move out west following my passions as a painter and creative. Through my journey as a visual artist I found a path specializing in murals and illustration. In my murals I work mostly through spray paint techniques and paint within the surrealism/realism styles. I have worked in a variety of fields within the mural and illustration industries most notably: in the music and television field painting murals promoting bands, albums, and artists, as well as my true passion with painting through bringing my personal vision to life on the wall in ways that impact a community or tell a story.
I really enjoy painting pieces with people, animals, and plants as a focus and adding in my signature vivid and graphic twist. Through the years of working, I feel confident that my diverse experience in painting through many avenues and styles gives me a keen ability in finding design solutions that can serve clients well through seeing how murals can take shape from many angles.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The first thing I think believe could help the creative industry for artists like myself would be a level of respect and understanding from people who enjoy the arts and what they bring to society, but have never considered the worth of all of those contributions from those skilled professionals. Everyday most people enjoy and benefit from creative industries of all kinds but don’t consider the importance of those artists and creators. I know this is a longstanding issue, but the more people recognize how much their lives are bettered from the art, music, fashion, design, etc surrounding them, then we may inch closer towards more chance for fair pay and opportunity for all creatives.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding feelings for me are all the clichés of course – seeing and hearing how your work and efforts uplift others, how they might heal or bring them joy, or inspire other creative people to go for it themselves. Also being able to get to know other artists that are connected through this funny little niche of artistic minds has been a big joy for me. Most other muralists that I’ve been privileged to meet are so open and warm, rarely gate-keep info or technique tips, and are so down to cheer for their fellow artists. I’m so happy to be a part of that big awesome group in some way and am constantly inspired by all the stunning work I see out in the world from all the artists I admire an aim to be like one day.
