What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the most important lessons I had to unlearn was the belief that “hard work alone guarantees success.” For a long time, I operated under the mindset that if I simply worked hard and put in the hours, success would naturally follow. However, my experience starting and growing Ruby Secrets Consulting taught me that hard work is just one piece of the puzzle—strategy, adaptability, and collaboration are just as critical.
The backstory begins with my own journey of self-petitioning for a U.S. green card through the EB2-NIW pathway. At first, I approached the process thinking that doing everything myself, no matter how challenging, would be enough. I spent countless hours researching, compiling evidence, and perfecting every detail. While I succeeded, I realized in hindsight that I could have saved time and avoided much of the stress by seeking expert guidance or delegating aspects of the process.
When I started Ruby Secrets Consulting, I carried that same mindset into the business. I tried to manage everything—client consultations, marketing, operations—on my own, believing that sheer effort would make the business thrive. But as the business grew, I hit a wall. I was overwhelmed, exhausted, and not delivering at the level I wanted for my clients.
That’s when I had to unlearn the idea that doing everything myself was the best path forward. I began to focus on working smarter, not just harder, by building a team, refining processes, and investing in tools and systems that made the business more efficient. I learned the power of collaboration, the importance of asking for help, and the value of trusting others to contribute their expertise.
