We were lucky to catch up with Andrena Phillips recently and have shared our conversation below.
Andrena, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I have been working since I was 16 years old. I worked for other people, helping them to achieve their dreams. But one day I decided that I wanted to see how far I could go with my own business. I had nothing to lose. I started my business in the life coaching and motivation speaking arena one day off a “Why not?” Others had always told me I was good at helping people to overcome their obstacles and I motivated them to move forward positively in their lives. I was constantly asked, “Are you a life coach?” Are you a motivational speaker?” I would laugh it off at first but then I recognize I do love this idea of serving others in life tips and speaking.
So, I started giving talks and tips to help people get through their life obstacles. And I was surprised at how well my business did. I soon had a large following of people who were benefiting from my advice. It was a win-win situation. And I was glad that I had decided to go into business for myself. I have not looked back since.
If I can encourage anyone the best way to go from idea to execution is SMART goals. SMART goals are the best way to achieve anything you set your mind to, it’s your roadmap to success. With SMART goals, you can be sure that you’re on the right track and making progress.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I remember when I was visioning my business, it was hard for me to see myself as successful. I would get excited about ideas but then doubt would quickly creep in and I would start to list all the reasons why it wouldn’t work. I would think about all of the other businesses in my industry and how they were already doing what I wanted to do and doing it well. I would get overwhelmed by thinking about all of the things I would need to do to get my business off the ground – and I would give up before I even started.
I slowly started to shift my mindset from one of scarcity to one of abundance. I started to see that there was enough room in the world for my business and that I could be successful even if there were other businesses doing similar things. I started to believe in myself and my abilities and I took the leap into starting my business.
It hasn’t been an easy journey, but I’m grateful that I unlearned the poverty mindset and started living in abundance. If I had continued to believe that my doubts and fears were true, I never would have started my business and I wouldn’t be doing what I love today.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Integrity, character and visibility are a few keys to standing out in your market to be successful. These are some important ingredients. Integrity positions you in higher places because of the morals and principles you demonstrate in your character. The character you allow the world to see determines who the world will have an opportunity to experience. With integrity and character you must be visible. The visibility will show your purpose, talents and gifts you get to share with others. People like, respect and trust those who have core values, character and the confidence to be uniquely them. If you have these attributes your reputation will speak for you because others will do the talking on your behalf. Remember, your market may have many but there is only one of you. Let your presence, power and purpose stand out.
