We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dtrap. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with dtrap below.
Hi Dtrap, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Hi, I’m Deep Chakraborty, but most people know me as dtrap. I’m a 26-year-old music producer and sample maker from India, working hard to carve my space in the Hollywood music industry. My journey into music started in high school when I became a huge fan of Eminem. Back then, I didn’t have much—a small Android phone and the Groove Mixer app—but I made it work. Those early experiments taught me a lot about creativity and persistence.
The the turning point for me ? There were a few, but one that really stands out is the day I discovered Nick Mira’s YouTube video on making trap beats. It completely changed the way I looked at music production. Before that, I was just messing around for fun, but that video showed me how to approach beats professionally. That’s when I decided this wasn’t just a hobby—it was my calling.
I started learning FL Studio on my Android phone because I couldn’t afford a PC at the time. It wasn’t easy, but I was determined. After a lot of trial and error, I finally got my hands on a second-hand desktop, and that’s when things really started to click. Along the way, I met Stanly, a producer from Durban, South Africa, who became my first mentor. He really inspired me to push my limits.
Breaking into Hollywood hasn’t been easy, especially coming from India, but I’ve managed to ghost-produce for artists and work on projects for artists like Jay R Rashiq, Benny Banks, Lil benny etc. Those experiences have been surreal. Of course, there have been challenges too. Early on, I posted beats on SoundCloud, and some of them got stolen. But I see those moments as stepping stones—they helped get my name out there.
Right now, I’m focused on launching my YouTube channel. I want to share tutorials, break down my production techniques, and connect with more artists globally. I’ve always aimed to work with names like Tyla, SZA, Kendrick Lamar, and Drake, and this feels like the next step toward that goal. Outside of music, I’ve also developed a passion for fitness. Balancing my creative ambitions with strength training keeps me grounded and focused.

Dtrap, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi, im Deep Chakraborty, known professionally as dtrap_ & on social media it’s @1dtrap_
I’m a 26 year old music producer and sample maker from Kolkata, India, and my musical journey has been nothing short of a beautiful adventure. It all started when I was around 5 or 7 probably, learning Indian classical music. But my true passion for producing music ignited in high school when I became a massive fan of Eminem. Joining an Eminem fan WhatsApp group through a Facebook page was a game-changer for me. There, I met a talented music producer named Stanly from Durban, South Africa. He was my first inspiration, and after learning from him, I thought, “Why not start producing music myself?”
So, In 2016, I dove into my music career using a small Android phone with an app called Groove Mixer. At that time, I wasn’t thinking about making money from it; rather it was all like just for fun with music. As a teacher, Stanly used to share tips with me, and one day, I stumbled upon a life-changing YouTube video: “How to Make a Metro Boomin X 21 Savage Type Beat in FL Studio” by Nick Mira from Internet Money Records. That video opened my eyes to the professional side of music production, and I knew I wanted to dive deeper.
Though I didn’t have a computer initially, I focused on making beats in FL Studio 11 on my Android device. I watched countless tutorials to learn the ins and outs of the software. Three years later, I finally bought a low-config PC, as it was the only thing I could afford at the time. Installing FL Studio felt like coming home, and I was ready to take my production to the next level!
After a year of practicing, I felt confident enough to share my work publicly. I created my first BeatStars profile and started showcasing my beats while also building my presence on Instagram with the handle @1dtrap_. These platforms allowed me to connect with artists and producers, slowly building a community around my music.
Over time, I began to gain recognition. One of my significant breaks came when I met my first artist collaboration, Jay R Rashiq (IG: @jayrrashiq). Working on his album “Party in My Casket” was a huge milestone for me. It validated my efforts and opened doors to more collaborations.
In the early days, I was posting beats on SoundCloud, and while some were unfortunately stolen without credit, I learned to see it as part of the journey. Those experiences, albeit frustrating, helped me gain visibility and popularize my music.
After collaborating with Jay R Rashiq, I shifted my focus to crafting samples and melodies. I realized that melodies are the heart and soul of a catchy song. This discovery drove me to experiment with unique sounds, Textures & vocal chops and I began exploring different genres, blending r&b elements from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s, creating something that resonated with both nostalgia and contemporary vibes.
To enhance my skills, I immersed myself in the work of influential producers like Noah 40 Shebib, Illangelo, TM88, Metro Boomin, 808Mafia (Southside), Nick Mira, Taz Taylor, and many others from Internet Money Records. Their tutorials and techniques inspired me to push my creativity further, helping me refine my sound and style.
As I learned, I started experimenting with vintage samples that spanned genres like R&B, pop, and funk, Trap, Hyperpop & etc. This exploration was thrilling, as I found joy in blending past influences with modern trap and hip-hop, crafting my unique sound that has become my signature style.
I also dove into vintage synths, realizing how their warmth and character could elevate my music. Playing around with iconic synths like the Jupiter, JUNO, Prophet and many others allowed me to create rich textures that enhanced my beats & Samples. It was like uncovering a treasure trove of sounds!
On this journey, I discovered the most precious treasure of all: my company.
I met her at work, and her name is Debi Dhar Chowdhury — the bright light of my life. Her unwavering support and unwavering encouragement lifts my spirits every day, inspiring me to keep pushing towards my dream of becoming a top advertising copywriter and winning a Grammy Award. Every convincing word he says ignites a fire in me, fuels my passion for music, and reminds me of the greater purpose behind my work. She’s not only my muse but the greatest blessing I’ve ever known. With her by my side, my paths have been illuminated, and every step of this beautiful journey is filled with love, purpose, and gratitude.
I would like to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to my incredible friends, Gobindo Das and Subho Banik, who have been my pillars of strength throughout my journey. They have always encouraged me, believed in my dreams, and stood by me during every high and low. After losing my parents many years ago, they became my family, my unwavering support system, and my biggest cheerleaders. Their presence in my life has been nothing short of a blessing, and I am deeply thankful to them for never leaving my side and for always pushing me to grow and reach greater heights.
“I’m currently part of a producer collective called Fresh808Gang, led by our incredible team leader, @breezy (IG: @breezy2472be). Being part of this group has been an amazing journey, where we constantly push creative boundaries while having a lot of fun doing what we love. Right now, we’re on a mission to achieve something extraordinary—winning a Grammy Award and earning Billboard recognition in the upcoming year. These goals reflect the hard work, passion, and synergy we share as a team. It’s truly inspiring to be part of something so impactful, and I’m beyond excited for what’s ahead!”
As I continued to grow, I engaged with renowned producers and sample makers like @prodbyloner, @macshooter49, and @prodharz. Their insights transformed my skills, and I learned so much about sound design and production techniques. The contributions from @beatsinner and @kabeh._ were invaluable in shaping my unique sound and style.
Thanks to their influence and my dedication, my samples and loops started gaining significant placements and sales across the globe. I had the chance to work with talented artists all around the world, like @bennybanksuk, @joellenofficial, @lilbenny, and many more. I even secured opportunities as a ghost sample maker for top artists, allowing my sound to leave a mark in the industry.
I focus on creating sounds tailored for artists like Drake, Chris Brown, PartyNextDoor, SZA, Summer Walker, d4vd, Tyla, Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, Future, and many others.
And this is how I’m confidently stepping forward on my journey to becoming a Billboard Top #1 music producer and a Grammy-awarded artist. With passion, creativity, and an unwavering belief in my craft, I know my dreams are within reach. I can’t wait to see where this incredible journey takes me next!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
To me, the most fulfilling part of being an artist or creative is the process of transforming raw emotions, ideas, and experiences into something that resonates with people. It’s amazing to create something from nothing and see it touch others on a deep, personal level—whether it’s a beat that moves them, a melody that sparks a memory, or a vibe that inspires creativity in someone else. Knowing that my work can evoke emotions and make an impact is what keeps me motivated and passionate about my craft. It’s not just about making; it’s about giving a piece of me to the world and making some kind of lasting impact.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely. My quest for creativity is inspired by the idea of crossing borders and proving that talent knows no region. With my roots in India and a blended landscape of genres written for my work in Hollywood, I aspire to be a global music producer who works with the most influential people while also encouraging others to achieve their goals regardless of their location.
Music of today should not only be understood by people, but should also create a new level of perception in the creative and innovative industries. In this way, partly my mission is to really build cross-cultural bridges — that is, between the artists, the creatives, and the audiences so as to really build bridges between places so that anyone with an ear for art can be given the opportunity to be appreciated.
