Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Imogen Pickton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Imogen , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today
At the very start of my freelancing journey, I had only just finished my A levels and was completely new to marketing. I undercharged massively at the start because I had no idea how to price my services. There’s no way I’d have been able to scale my business back then with what I was charging. If I was starting again I would research a lot more before creating packages and build the confidence I needed to charge my worth. I would also put myself forward for more opportunities. When I started my business I wasn’t really advocating for myself and putting my name forward for opportunities. This year alone some incredible things have happened because I’ve put myself forward for them so looking back I do wish I’d done that sooner.

Imogen , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi everyone, I’m Imogen and I am the founder of Imogen Grace Socials. I’m passionate about helping businesses to improve their social media presence. I’ve worked with businesses in multiple industries including STEM, beauty and wellness as well as working with individuals to build strong personal brands.
Growing up I never really knew what I wanted to do. I was always very creative and ended up doing a virtual work experience programme which is what sparked my interest in marketing. I started posting on LinkedIn and ended up deciding to freelance as a result. LinkedIn has been a big factor in my career so far, generating leads and allowing me to grow a following of over 17,000 people.
My main services are social media management & personal branding packages. I know there can be such a misconception that LinkedIn is really boring and corporate leaving many people hesitant to start. I really want to change this narrative and play a role in helping business owners to build a brand that they can be proud of. I’ve built my own personal brand, launched services, received awards and I love that I can use that journey to help my clients.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
As I’ve briefly mentioned I was quite shy and inexperienced when I first started posting on LinkedIn. It can feel scary to start and I definitely experienced that but I knew I had to push myself. Over the past 3 years, I’ve consistently shared content across Instagram and LinkedIn, taking my audience with me. Whilst I did initially feel like my age and lack of experience made my opinion less important it has actually become the factor that sets me apart. By leaning into my growth and experiences as a young marketer I launched my newsletter which currently has almost 5,000 subscribers! For me, these results have come from staying consistent and committing to my brand.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
LinkedIn without a doubt. When I decided to really focus on freelancing earlier this year and build my own agency I already had an audience and credibility. Through creating a content strategy and putting a lead generation process in place I’ve been able to grow my business through LinkedIn. It can honestly be such a life changing platform for business owners which is why I’m so passionate about personal branding.
