We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dj Dholak a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
DJ , appreciate you joining us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
I think that the kindest thing that has ever been done for us is all the support our friends have given us. Ever since we started the journey of being DJ’s our friends have asked us to play at events they have thrown, purchased our DJ Dholak T shirts, interacted with our social media content and support us at our gigs. If it wasn’t for all of the support of our friends and the people who enjoy our DJing we wouldn’t have gotten as many opportunities as we have. They truly make us better.

DJ , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
DJ Dholak started when one of our dad’s suggested that we should try DJing as I have been playing Indian drums since I was two.. After two months Meki and I were just cooking up one day on the DJ controller and slowly started to realize that we sounded very good together and collaborated well. We both had a passion for music but DJing was uncharted territory for the both of us. After a lot of talking we decided that we should DJ together. Our friend Noah Beny helped inspire us by making us think about something that meant a lot to us to give us an idea for a DJ name. Since I played the Indian drum (the Dholak) since I was like two we decided that the name DJ Dholak would fit us as it was something unique about me and what I loved to play as a kid. After we talked to Noah and our friends about the name, they all agreed that it sounded good and that is how we got ur name. The whole purpose of this was to make people experience joy through the music we were mixing. The thing that we are the most proud of is how people interact with the music that we mix.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being a DJ is seeing all the people at our gigs happy and dancing to the music that we are mixing. This is the reason that we DJ, people being happy and listening to the music we mix makes this all worth it.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Honestly one of the toughest things about being a DJ that people will struggle through is learning the technical skills such as mixing the right music. The biggest tricks we have found to help navigating through this struggle is by watching YouTube videos, listening to a lot of music and practicing a lot.
