We recently connected with Javan Allison Monique Cooper and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Javan Allison thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
On February 17, 2018; I had an asthma attack that put me in ICU. I suffer from severe Asthma, Anxiety and ADHD. This day wasn’t a great day for me. I couldn’t breathe while My mom was in the shower, I went in and wrote on the fog mirror Help Me! Monique replies: After being admitted into the hospital, we learned so much more about Javan’s illness. One of the things we learned was that ADHD and Anxiety can play a part in having an asthma attack along with his allergies and others. As JAVAN was getting better, I asked if he was ok with telling his story and he said yes. At the time, a friend had just published her childrens book, so I reached out to her on how to go about writing a childrens book. She also happen to be the owner of “Tyler grace Publishing”. So We proceeded in trying to figure out the best way in telling his story from how he feels. The main question, which is displayed in the book, is how do you feel when having an asthma attack. Javan says, “He feels like an astronaut out of space with a cracked helmet”. This is what pushes us to write his experiences in an adventurous way. Once we wrote it out, got our illustrations, the next month we were published Authors. We later wrote the other two books together which is on ADHD and anxiety.
Javan Allison, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
After writing the first book “Asthma Sucks”; we got so much great feed back. Javan was both acknowledged through his school boards district; Miami-Dade County Public schools and was given a proclamation. The National Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America did a story on JAVAN and how He overcame his asthma attacks and his day to day living with Asthma. Miami Gardens also recognized Javan and he was given a day, September 29th as “Javan Allison Asthma Awareness Day”. The response from people all over the world was great and they had questions and wanted to know more about JAVAN and how he controls his asthma. This pushed us to become asthma advocates to help other kids and families around the world. I’m most proud of how JAVAN allows the world to see him for who he is. He plays sports and don’t let his disabilities defeat him. We want to continue to share his story, share his day to day living and show the world that it’s a fight but a fight he’s willing to push through in hopes of becoming successful in all he do.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Right now our biggest audience is on TikTok. Putting the camera on JAVAN and actually seeing what he writes about comes to life is what the world want to see. Javan is the kid that plays football, baseball, runs track, he acts, he’s been featured in music videos and more. They not only see the good, but they see the bad as well and they are the most supporting fans ever! Our other audience is of course on Instagram as well. All we do is post motivation, awareness of the 3 A’s and everything Javan. The feedback is great and everyone loves him. The audience to us aren’t considered fans, they are more like cousins, brothers, sisters, overall family to us.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
Our books are on the website, www.javanallison.com or www.theadventuresofjavan.com and it is on Amazon as well.
