We were lucky to catch up with Tiffani Thomas recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tiffani thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
So once I was able to acquire at-least 10 students, I knew I had something special. It was like a feeling I never felt before! You know that gut feeling that you don’t get often?! In the beginning, of course, I didn’t have all the answers, but I was aware that I would need to build my clientele! I had to come up with pricing (We have changed at-least 3 times), a location for the tutoring (which is where I came up with the Mobile/traveling idea), I wanted to make it easier for the parents, and let’s be honest my self as well! Once I figured out how much I wanted to charge, and a place to conduct the tutoring, nothing held me back, and I went for it!
Tiffani , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Tiffani Thomas. I own Thomas Mobile Tutoring LLC. I’ve been in business for going on 8 years now. My company caters to students in K-12 (all subjects), and collegiate courses as well! I have a team of 9 tutors (10 including myself). We specialize in education, and building students confidence inside and out of the classroom! We’ve serviced over 1,500+ students in the City of Detroit, and surrounding areas. My company offers affordable pricing, and has become on of the most popular tutoring companies in Detroit, Michigan! My company has contracts throughout the city such as: Non-profit organizations, local churches, and schools. We also provide private tutoring to students as well (We travel to their home which makes us unique). We also have specials for single mothers!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I began tutoring, I was actually at a very low point in my life. At some point, my license was suspended. I know some people may look at that and say, “welp who hasn’t had suspended license?” Although that has become a common thing, it wasn’t the best situation for me seeing that my entire company is based on TRAVELING BY CAR. Of course, if your license is suspended you have to avoid certain areas, and cities. Boy was that a challenge! After a while, a judge demanded that I stop driving, and If I was caught driving, I would be in big trouble with the law! So instead of me giving up on my company, I decided I was going to learn how to catch the city bus, and I did just that! My mom and other family members were so concerned for my safety. For the first time in my life I felt free! I loved not having to worry about looking over my shoulder while driving, and it forced me to pay on my license so that they would be reinstated! The downside was that I now had to adjust my schedule, and mindset to be able to get through each day! It was really tough because my students began noticing I was walking to their home, and they would ask me, “Miss Tiffani did you catch the bus here?” I would always avoid the question, or tell them to mind their business lol! Thankfully, I now have my license, and I’m able to travel to more cities, and reach even more students!
Question not found
I think this is a very great question! I tell people all the time, before you worry about an LLC, a Buisness bank account, or even a location for your business, you must build an audience! The key word is “Consistency”! I would always recommend that you stay consistent, and never give up! It will get easier as you go. More people will reach out as long as you STAY THE COURSE! Lastly, I’m big on being consistent with my flyers. I don’t like having too many different flyers and color schemes. I never want to confuse the customers.
