Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cathey Bolin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Cathey, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I taught myself how to play guitar when I was about 12. My cousin gifted me a “guitar basics” book that showed me how to play every chord imaginable and basic strumming patterns. I’ve always been a fairly determined person so when I set my mind to learning how to play, I spent many hours and months working to achieve it.
I’m not sure that speeding up the learning process when playing an instrument is necessarily a possibility. I spent an insane amount of hours practicing and the only way I think I might have learned anything quicker, would have been to take actual lessons. Learning an instrument is not for the weak, but it’s so worth it.
Consistency is absolutely key in learning new songs, writing, playing instruments, etc. Nobody starts out perfect, but the more research you do, the more you play with other people, the more you write, you slowly become a little better each time!
There have been entirely too many obstacles to count. At one point, I was working a full time job and going to school while also trying to further my music career. My job and school most definitely took away from my time with music because those were my main priorities at the moment. I made sure to keep music in the background while not letting it go completely and that worked out for me in the long run because once I graduated, I had a ridiculous amount of free time that I could put towards furthering my own business.

Cathey, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a singer/songwriter from Brenham, Texas. I’ve grown up in a family full of musicians and I’m simply trying to keep the live music alive and well not only in my family, but in general. I play a wide variety of music but my love of 90s country trumps it all. I have some music of my own that I’ve released recently with plenty more to come. I fully believe live music should be fun and exciting, so that’s always been my goal. I love meeting new people and making connections because music is more than just playing some songs in the background to earn a paycheck. It’s a hobby, an escape, a dream, and most importantly something that everyone can connect with. I truly hope that anyone who listens my music can enjoy and relate with it as much as I can!

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Finding a way to relate to a wide audience is so difficult, especially in today’s world where it consumes everyone’s days and everyone has their own “for you page” and algorithm. I’ve found that just being yourself goes so much farther. I make it a point to connect with everyone I possibly can when I meet them at gigs. Someone is far more likely to follow you and support you if they like you as a person. Putting a face with a name on a screen adds to the connection significantly.
I also believe that it’s perfectly acceptable to post things that aren’t only “business” related. You can find a way to post things that still apply to your business, but also don’t look like a regular ad that a company paid for. If you love what you do, then it will come across on your social media to your audience as well.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being a musician is not something that everyone is able to experience and I think I’m incredibly blessed to have not only grown up surrounded by talented musicians, but also getting to pursue my own journey with it. Between having the opportunity to sit down and talk with well known artists, record my own songs, and so much more, it’s an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything.
