We recently connected with Nathan James and have shared our conversation below.
Nathan, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
It all started when I was 10 years old, when I got my first CD for my brand new CD player at the time. The CD was of a boyband called Plus One whom I really enjoyed listening to as a kid. Listening to that album over and over again, is what got me started and interested in music and playing instruments.
The very first instrument I ever learned how to play was drums and is my most fluent instrument to this day. I got my first electronic drum kit when I was 11 and started learning and playing them regularly. I would literally practice in my room for 5 hours plus a day on my drums. Once I learned how to play my first couple songs on drums, I became hooked and passionate about music over all.
Then when I was 13 I began learning guitar in the same practicing way… then bass at 14, then a little bit of piano / synth at 17.
From the moment I started learning drums I knew I wanted to eventually have a career pursuing music professionally.

Nathan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I (Nathan) am the founder and creator of the electronic / pop / rock band called Circadia. We record and perform positive and uplifting music that many can relate to in their daily lives.
Our mission statement as a band is the acrostic B.U.I.L.T which stands for Be Kind, Use Your Gifts, Inspire Others, Love Unconditionally, and Try Your Best. Our mission as a band is what I firmly believe sets us apart from other bands as we try to live out our mission statement in our everyday lives both on and off stage.
Circadia founded in 2018 as a side project where I dabbled in the world of electronic music. Our debut album came out on November 8th, 2019 called Seeking Completion. In 2021, my wife Alyssa joined the band as our synth and piano player… we then began pursuing Circadia professionally from then on. Then on July 21st, 2023 our second full length album called Built From Heartache was released. We are currently working on an acoustic EP (per popular demand) which is set to release in the spring/summer of 2025.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I’ve heard a lot of people / co workers / friends, tell me that they can’t understand how and why I willingly dedicate so much: time, money, effort etc… into pursuing Circadia as a career because, said people don’t believe it’s a practical or good source of income or way of living.
All I can say to those who think this way is when you’re truly passionate about something, and you love doing it, and pour your heart and soul into it… There’s nothing else like it, nothing that can quench that thirst or feeling other than what your passionate about.
There was a period of time in my life in 2021 before my wife joined the band that I almost gave up on music completely. It was because, of false beliefs about myself and what I was doing that led me to that breaking point. All it took though was a encouragement video from one of my musical idols to lift my spirit up and push myself to keep going and to never give up.
I’m truly thankful for my wife and that experience because it taught me to never give up, no matter how hard the journey is or gets.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Go to as many of your favorite artists concerts and events as you can as often as you can. Also, please support your favorite artist by purchasing their music and merchandise. I can’t stress enough how important this is to an artist… It’s also the most effective way to support your favorite artist directly is by buying their music and merchandise as often as you can and attending as many of their events as you can.
Every artist started as a small business at one point, someone who dreamt of being known and growing and sharing their message to the world.
At the very least, supporting your favorite artist can also be sharing their social media content, liking their posts, sharing their posts, telling others about it, commenting, etc… All of this greatly helps artists so much more than you know.
