We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lisa Cashion. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lisa below.
Lisa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about how you got your first non-friend, non-family client. Paint the picture for us so we can feel the same excitement you felt on that day.
In late 2018, I began to feel a nudge—and some encouragement from others—to start baking for people beyond my family. But despite the support, I was held back by self-doubt and internal angst. My first real sale came in the most unexpected way and taught me some important lessons along the journey.
It started with someone who tried to take advantage of my baking skills. Long story short, I made a cake for them, but when it came time to pay, they dodged me at every turn. While I hadn’t asked for payment upfront, I at least knew better than to hand over the cake without receiving the money first. Ultimately, they ghosted me, leaving me with a super cute and delicious cake and a bad taste in my mouth—figuratively speaking.
At that moment, I convinced myself this “baking for others” idea wasn’t going to work. I started justifying why I should keep my baking limited to my family and very close friends. After all, how could I trust strangers when my first attempt ended like this? (Side note: Isn’t it amazing how quickly we dismiss our gifts when others disappoint or reject us?)
But then, something incredible happened! The very next morning, while I was at work, my phone rang. On the other end of the line was the Vice President of my department. She asked me if I baked and whether I could make some desserts for an event she was hosting that weekend. Caught off guard but excited, I nervously threw out a random price and said yes. After hanging up, I thought, “Okay, God, is this how You’re going to get this business started?”
At that time, there wasn’t a business—not even a name or a plan. But her call reaffirmed something I needed to hear: someone outside of my friends and family valued what I had to offer. That weekend, on Saturday morning, her assistant came to pick up the order. To my surprise, she handed me a wad of cash that was DOUBLE the price I had quoted. Before I could say a word, she was gone, leaving me standing there, equal parts shocked and excited.
That moment changed everything. It wasn’t just about the money—it was about someone validating my talent in a way I hadn’t yet done for myself. The next day, I began putting together the pieces of what would eventually become *Bake Me Away*. It all started because someone outside of my inner circle saw the value in my work and was willing to pay for it. Looking back, I’m so grateful for that experience—even the part where I was ghosted—because it set me on the path I’m on today.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello! I’m Lisa Cashion, a mostly self-taught baker and cake decorator with a deep love for food and an early obsession with cooking shows on public television. My journey into baking started out of sheer curiosity and passion—I loved to eat and experiment in the kitchen, and baking became a creative outlet that felt like home. Over time, I honed my skills through a blend of trial and error, a little pastry school, LOTS of late-night baking sessions, and knowing the end result would be something beautiful and delicious.
In 2019 I officially launched *Bake Me Away* after being nudged by God and a desire to share my love for cake with others. I offer custom cakes, indulgent cake jars, and dessert tables. Also returning in 2025 are our beginner-friendly cake decorating classes. My goal is to help clients celebrate life with desserts that look stunning and taste even better. Whether it’s a wedding, a corporate event, a family gathering or just a random Tuesday, I’m here to make their celebrations sweeter.
One of the biggest problems I solve for clients is taking the stress out of planning their desserts. They come to me with a vision or sometimes just a color palette, and I transform it into a show-stopping centerpiece. I think what sets me apart is the personal touch I bring—I genuinely care about making sure every detail is perfect and tailored to the client.
What I’m most proud of is how far I’ve come from those early days of doubt. I remember questioning if this dream could ever become a reality, but seeing my creations bring people joy has been the ultimate validation. Every order, every smile, and every milestone shared with my clients reminds me that this “cake thing” was meant to happen.
To potential clients, followers, or fans: *Bake Me Away* is about more than just cakes. It’s about celebrating life’s sweet moments, fostering creativity, and making memories that last. I want people to know that whether they’re trusting me with their event or learning to decorate their first cake, I’m here to make the experience as special and meaningful as possible.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a cake artist and owning a dessert business is seeing the joy my creations bring to people. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about knowing that the cake I’ve spent hours designing, baking, and decorating becomes part of someone’s most cherished moments—a baby shower, a birthday, or even just a small celebration with loved ones. It’s not just about making desserts; it’s about helping our clients create memories one delicious bite at a time.
I also love the creative freedom that comes with this craft. Every cake is a blank canvas, and I get the. pleasure of transforming a simple idea into an edible work of art. Whether it’s translating a client’s vision into reality or surprising them with a design that exceeds their expectations, that creative process fuels me and keeps me passionate about what I do.
Finally, I’d say the personal growth has been just as rewarding. Owning *Bake Me Away* has taught me so much—about resilience, the importance of trusting my abilities, and how to connect with people through food. Knowing that something I created can spark happiness or inspire someone else is the ultimate reward.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely! At *Bake Me Away*, one of our core goals is to use our creativity and success as a way to give back to the local community. While we love creating beautiful and delicious desserts, our mission goes beyond just cakes and sweets—we’re passionate about making a positive impact in the lives of others. That’s why a significant part of our journey includes supporting local charities and community organizations through fundraising efforts.
Whether it’s partnering with schools, hosting bake sales, or donating a portion of our proceeds to causes close to our hearts, we believe in the power of food to bring people together and make a difference. Our desserts aren’t just about celebration; they’re also about connection, kindness, and contributing to something bigger than ourselves.
This mission drives everything we do. It reminds us that our talent and passion are our ministry and are a force for good—not just for the people enjoying our creations but for the wider community. The idea of using our work to support causes that move us, uplift neighbors, and bring hope to those in need keeps us motivated and inspired to keep growing, both as artists and as a business.
