We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Renaud Nogrix a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Renaud thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the toughest things about progressing in your career is that there are almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
I got this family of 4 that was coming from Cuba, and with no credit score yet and not 6 months of rent to give upfront, finding a place is always a challenge. We went through 5 offers, and honestly the 4th one, they were taking it by default. The worst is we got denied on this house which was not even well maintained. So through more looking from me, we finally got to this apartment in a complex with pool in Coral Gables, and finally we found them a great place. The daughters were really excited by the pool, and the parents happy to get a great apartment in a safe environment. The commission wasn’t that great, but helping a new family settle in a new place is always rewarding, as an immigrant my self, i know that this isn’t an easy process, so helping and guiding people through this is really rewarding and give you a sense of happiness through your work that you don’t get to experience every time.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got in Miami in 2009, and got licensed in 2013. I got the license while i was bartending in Miami, decided to widen my options and went for real estate. I got my first rental pretty quick, but then things got harder. So i went back to bartends and expand my client base. I got my first listing while bartending, I met a client there, and we got to talk real estate, this conversation led to my first listing. All through the years, got more clients, learned more and got a few real estate certifications, cause you always have to try to be better, and more educated than your competition. The more knowledgeable you get, the more you will be able to help your clients through the process or renting/buying their house/apartment. And when you get your clients to save money, for some realtors it make them think that they are losing out on commission, but someone who you help will be referring you to friends and family, as the opposite, if a client feel that you were just there to pick up the most money you could, there is no way you hear from them again. Plus, the feeling that you made your clients real happy they chose to work with you is quite exhilarating!

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I tried to work as a car salesman, and the job was to rip off the clients, this is what the management wants from you. And not only you have to trick your clients but the other sales man will try to steal your clientele too. The environment was so nasty that i ended up quitting after 2 months. I didn’t like making money by overcharging my clients and steal from my colleagues, which was normal for most of my colleague and they have no remorse doing it. So i pivoted to real estate, and it was a breath of fresh air, cause you actually are helping your clients getting better deals, save them money and don’t have to abuse them. This is really rewarding!

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I get most of my clients by either referral or person i personally know and trust, and i will work out the best deal i can with them! Getting the trust of a client is probably the hardest part, this is why i am proud to get referral leads by former clients that i could help throughout the years!
