We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Faith Dodson-bey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Faith, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Taking a risk means having Faith in an outcome that is not immediately visible.
As an entrepreneur, I believe taking risk is essential; if you don’t push yourself to take risk, you will never discover the extent of your potential. Limiting beliefs serve as the root to all problems. When I embarked on my entrepreneurial journey at the age of 13, it was inherently a risk. Although I did not fully understand what I was getting myself into, I recognized that it brought me joy. All I needed was to have Faith as small as a mustard seed to initiate that first step, which ultimately contributes to my success today.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Faith Bey, also known as Stylez By Slim. I am a 25 year old versatile stylist based in Philadelphia, PA.
I embarked on my journey in hairstyling at the age of 12, taking on my first client when I was just 13. I’ve always loved getting my hair done as a child despite being tender-headed and would kick and scream the entire time lol. For me, doing hair has never been a hobby, I’ve always looked at it like my destined task in the world, which is to make others feel beautiful.
Stylez By Slim is the official name of my brand, which I cherish deeply. Some of the services I provide are; Lace Wig installations with both glueless and adhesive options, quick weaves, ponytails, hair coloring, natural hair care, and more.
What distinguishes me from other stylist is that I’m 1of 1, I consistently strive to elevate my craft, and with my unique approach it always allows me to take things up a notch! Each and every time you come across me or my work I’m always upping the score.
My work is creative, eye catching, Illuminous, fun, and we don’t play it safe! We step outside the box and stand on top!
Having spent 12 years in the beauty industry, I have evolved into a person my younger self would admire. Over the years I have organized numerous hair shoots across different cities showcasing my talent.
I have also developed my own hair color line, “Hóuse of Colorz” featuring over 25 vibrant shades. Additionally, I run an
online boutique named
“Bougie Aesthetics” All things Beauty Everything Bougie, offering a wide range of beauty products. I have also launched
A braided wig line called “Braided Bodega” offering handmade Full lace braided wigs sourcing from Nigeria.
I take great pride in my resilience, continuing to persevere even when faced with challenges. With faith in God I know that I will be all that he has called me to be. I take pride in my achievements, recognizing that this is just the beginning.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a hairstylist is witnessing my clients’ reactions upon the completion of their service. My ultimate goal when servicing a client is to provide an experience that will leave them feeling like the most beautiful girl in the world, ensuring that they are motivated to return for future appointments.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was the tendency to exert excessive control over my life, at times I can be so hard on myself and feel like I am not achieving enough instead of realizing I am sitting in my answered prayers. The lesson was to let go of the expectation that everything should unfold according to my plans and instead embrace the notion that events will align as they are meant to.
