We recently connected with Roderick Casadores and have shared our conversation below.
Roderick, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
It started with my old roommate Michael, back in the spring of 2017 He knocked on my door, and told me that he had a vision. That he saw me owning my own small moving business, and that I will do great because I would provide great service to my clients, and to the community. I told Michael, my old roommate that he’s crazy. No one will hire me, no one will trust me moving their entire house, let alone a guy like me. But Michael was very persistent. I would always say no, that’s not gonna happen. After almost 5 months of going back, and forth with him telling me that I just need to do it. It ended up Michael just made me a business card, and would help me start the moving business moving forward., and name it MR. Move OC why is it called MR. Move? Well M is for Michael, funny thing is my brother’s name is also Michael, and R is for Roderick. combine the 2 letters you get MR. We do our moving business primarily in Orange County, and that what OC stands for. So, MR. Move OC was born. I gave it a try because Michael made the business cards for me for free, and I’ve got nothing to lose. Then one day, I was at my local Trader Joe’s store in San Juan Capistrano getting some groceries, when one of the cashiers that I was having small talks with mentioned to me that she’s moving. I told her that I’m actually a mover. I gave her my business card, and I never heard back from her. Then within 3 weeks after I gave my business card. I got a call from my first client that’s moving, and wanted an estimate for moving, and packing job. That’s the first moving job I got, that first client started referring me, and started passing, and giving my business cards to her family, and friends. The rest was history…
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Roderick M Casadores. I’ve lived in South Orange County for 31yrs I’m currently residing in Laguna Niguel, California. I love going on road trips, I’m into mountain biking, hiking, and outdoor adventures. A coffee aficionado, love steaks, and old fashioned whiskey. I got into moving from a marine veteran who became a good friend of mine. he’s name is Clay, and introduced me to Self Made Moving Company back in 2016 started as a mover, and learned all the ropes in the moving industry, till my roommate Michael had encouraged me to start my own moving company. Our business motto is going above, and beyond your expectations. I believe that MR. Move OC provides a top notch full service moving, and packing job that caters to all Americans moving anywhere in the United States, and I’m very proud to say that as a small business owner of a small moving company. We work hard as a team, we have a lot of fun doing it, and by the end of the work day. When we see our client’s completely happy, and satisfied with our move, I take my crew to dinner, we have a comraderie, and celebrate. Then we do it again on the next job. I always promise my client’s that they don’t have to worry, MR. Move will take care of everything. Just relax, and enjoy the show. We provide full service professional moving, packing, transportation, In states, out of state move, business office move, organizing, purging storage units, We also move grand piano, upright piano, chandelier, pool table, grand father clock, and transport boat, cars, horses, jet skis, etc… you name it, will move / transport it.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
As a small business owner I have to unlearn how to not micromanage my crew. One of my crew told me to micromanaging them makes it harder to function as a team. It puts pressure, and stress. Specially if you have a well oiled machine of professional household movers that doesn’t need baby sitting. It took me awhile to unlearn that bad trait as a small business owner. Now I just sit back, and I let them do their thing. The result, we work faster, more efficient, and way less stressful.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Referrals from my clients that I moved. I have a lot of repeat client’s. one of them I’ll be moving for the ninth time next week. I also have realtors that refer me to their client’s. I always communicate, touch base with my clients to see how they are doing, letting them know that I’m still in the moving business, if they need anything they can always count on me to be there for them. Because for me it’s personal. I really go above, and beyond for my client’s. That’s why we’re still in business for 7yrs and counting. and doing this interview will help promote, and source potential new client’s for MR. Move OC.
