We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Carrie Moore a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Carrie, appreciate you joining us today. We believe kindness is contagious and so we’d love for you to share with us and our audience about the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
I like this question because I can genuinely say the most generous act of kindness shown to me related to my business wasn’t just from a single person. It was a collective of caring people who genuinely want to see me thrive. From friends supporting me by buying my clothing, helping me logistically at events, people connecting me with others to help grow my business; offering free advise and tools, small loans, time, brand loyalty, encouragement, and love. Because of all of these people, I am growing my business and really starting to see the impact it’s beginning to make. It’s a domino effect. I want this to be encouraging to those who think they’re doing it all alone. When I take a moment to have gratitude and reflect on my journey, I realize I was never alone either.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Carrie Moore and I am the owner of Kismet Wear, a spiritual activewear brand for women and now men too! My clothing line is meant to be a way to spread a message of love and positivity by the affirmations on its pieces. I take the time to carefully pick each piece to make sure it’s something that aligns with my brand that everyone will love.
But that’s not all I do. By day, I am a full time Registered Dental Hygienist and on the weekends I serve at a local restaurant. Two years ago, I also purchased my first investment property. There are a lot of moving parts to my life and at times it’s just shy of crazy. I also love traveling, which is what sparked my idea for Kismet Wear. I began Kismet Wear after a solo trip to Costa Rica, in an attempt to build another stream of income to eventually purchase an investment property there as well. On that trip, I continued to say how “kismet” (fateful) it was. That trip truly changed my life. What began as an idea to propel myself to reach my dream of owning a property in Costa Rica, has now turned into its own dream.
What I’m most proud of is what my brand represents and the message it’s sending. We live in uncertain times and showing a glimmer of love and kindess can go a long way. Most recently, I’ve collaborated with several other incredible local entrepreneurs to host an event called “Embody Love”. This event is being held at the Ayurveda Wellness House in Lakewood on January 11th from 5-9pm. It is meant to connect people while giving back to the community. My new “Twin Flame” collection will be featured with local artisans. We will offer each guest reiki healing, massages, and sound bath experiences, food, drinks, and live music! A night to connect and treat yourself to some unique experiences that are good for your mind, body, and soul. Proceeds from this special event will be donated to the City Mission. A cause that has helped those in need in our community for a century. I’m honored to be able to create a space with my brand to help give back. Being a brand that represents love and positivity is not just about selling it, it’s about living it too.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I am just starting to build my reputation within the market. Being a new brand, I am learning as I go. The reputation I hope to build is honesty, respect, and consistency. I try to keep an open line of communication with my customers. I regularly communicate with them to make sure everyone loves their pieces. I also listen to my customers feedback to help grow and improve my business. I recently added a Men’s line, new pieces, and more options to people, mostly from feedback I receive. It’s important for me to be authentic. I want people to know that they’re receiving a product from someone who genuinely cares and works hard to build brand recognition through that concept.

Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
Kismet Wear originally started as a drop-shipping clothing brand on Etsy. I never touched the product, just designed them virtually. Third party businesses manufactured and shipped the merchandise to the customer. The return on investment was very small and proved not to be a lucrative option. I then transitioned into having physical merchandise on hand and used a local printing company. I am doing everything for the first time in each process, so there’s been some trial and error. Some wholesalers are more predictable than others. Sometimes I’ll order pieces, but only receive a fraction of what I ordered. I had to learn who to buy from and what to expect from the wholesale market in general. I decided that in order to have more control over my product, faster production time, and lower costs, I would purchase my own heat press printer. So about a month ago I did that. I’ve turned my basement into what’s now a workshop/office for my business. I’m happy I took the leap of faith in trying something I’ve never done before and seeing it grow. Here’s a great life lesson I learned from an author I met recently; If you’re scared and questioning wether or not to do something, do it scared.
