We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maria Antonia Vallejo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Maria Antonia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
In 2023, I left a stable job to pursue my passion for fashion journalism and storytelling. I launched The Latin Issue, a digital magazine dedicated to showcasing Latin American talent and sustainable practices.
It was a bold step with no guarantees of success, but I knew I’d regret not trying. Starting from scratch was challenging, but the platform gained traction, becoming a space for emerging designers and conscious fashion enthusiasts.
This risk taught me that following your passion, even when uncertain, can lead to the most fulfilling rewards.
Maria Antonia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m María Antonia, a journalist, copywriter, and image consultant specializing in fashion. I’ve always been passionate about storytelling, creativity, and the power of fashion as a cultural and social statement. After years of writing for established outlets and freelancing, I decided to take a leap of faith and create The Latin Issue, a digital magazine dedicated to celebrating Latin American talent in the fashion industry.
The Latin Issue is more than just a publication—it’s a platform that highlights emerging designers, promotes sustainable practices, and addresses the unique challenges of the Latin American fashion ecosystem. We provide fashion news, locally-focused editorials, and free educational resources like webinars to support upcoming talent. I also offer personal image consulting services, helping individuals enhance their style through accessible, practical advice.
What sets The Latin Issue apart is its focus on the often-overlooked voices of Latin American fashion. We are proud to amplify regional designers and emphasize sustainable, ethical practices in an industry that often prioritizes profit over principles.
I’m most proud of creating a space where creativity and consciousness intersect—a platform that inspires people to see fashion not just as a product, but as a narrative that reflects identity, culture, and values. To our followers and potential collaborators, I want them to know that our mission is rooted in authenticity and a deep love for the craft. Whether you’re here for inspiration, collaboration, or education, The Latin Issue is a space for you.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, my creative journey is driven by a deep desire to amplify Latin American talent in the fashion industry and to foster a more sustainable, ethical approach to fashion. With The Latin Issue, my mission is to create a platform that not only showcases emerging designers but also promotes fashion that is conscious of both cultural identity and environmental impact.
I believe that fashion has the power to tell meaningful stories and bring people together, and I want to create a space where local designers and creatives can share their work with the world while encouraging responsible consumption and production. My goal is to inspire a community that values creativity, culture, and sustainability—one that can make a real difference in how fashion is perceived and consumed.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the ability to inspire and connect with others through my work. Whether it’s through The Latin Issue or my image consulting, seeing how my ideas and efforts resonate with people and help them express their individuality or understand fashion from a new perspective is incredibly fulfilling.
Being able to share stories of emerging designers, highlight the beauty of Latin American culture, and promote sustainable fashion feels like a meaningful contribution to the industry. It’s the feeling of knowing that what I create can spark change, open minds, and foster a deeper connection to fashion and its true value.
