Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brandee J. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brandee, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
Being raised by my parents and grandmother opened my eyes to many truths about the world. In all honesty, it was my grandmother who taught me how to be a woman of grace, style, and elegance—and to never take any nonsense from anyone.
Growing up, I was a chunky little girl, and my grandmother ensured that I loved myself, even when my father, sisters, and mother made me feel as though something was wrong with me because of my size. She helped me see my true beauty beyond my size, and through her love, my confidence grew to such an extent that my mother and siblings resented me for it.
This experience taught me that people often have a problem with people who have confidence because of their own insecurities. It also reinforced the importance of staying authentic to who I am. To this day, I operate with this mindset.
Over the years, I’ve encountered many people who were intimidated by greatness and confidence, and their reactions revealed their true selves. I love it! I embrace these moments because they show me exactly who they are and how I need to navigate my relationships with them, both in business and in my personal life.

Brandee, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
From a young age, Brandee J has been a protector and advocate, driven by an innate
calling to make a difference. Growing up in the city of San Diego, CA, she was shaped by a
unique perspective on life, influenced by her father’s military discipline.
Brandee, the youngest of four, faced harsh teasing and weight shaming, even from her father,
who nicknamed her Ms. Piggy. At just 10 years old, she was put on her first of many diets,
sparking a battle with eating disorders and depression that led to two suicide attempts.
However, at 16, with her grandmother’s support, Brandee began to embrace her beauty and
self-worth. Undeterred by life’s challenges, Brandee worked full-time while pursuing her college
education, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and becoming a mother at
21.
Her determination to achieve greatness was evident early on, leading her to make waves in the
fashion industry. In 2015, she became the Executive Editor of Manik Magazine and founded
NWFW+, the first New York Fashion Week event dedicated to plus-size women.
Brandee’s vision didn’t stop there. She launched Luxe Kurves Magazine, the first luxury lifestyle
magazine for curvy women of color, featuring celebrities like Rick Ross, Torrei Hart, and stars
from Tyler Perry’s hit show “Sistas.”
In 2018, she expanded her influence on television with “The Brandee J Show” on YouTube,
showcasing her mission to inspire others to be authentic and pursue their dreams.
Brandee’s presence graced numerous red carpets, including the BET Awards and New York
Fashion Week, but she knew her purpose extended beyond these events.
In 2021, she paused her ventures to rebuild and elevate her life, leading to the creation of her
empowering lifestyle brand, “Brandee J Lifestyle,” in 2024.
“Brandee J Lifestyle” is a multifaceted media brand dedicated to helping individuals live life on
their terms through travel, healthy relationships, motivation, business insights, and more.
Brandee’s new brand focuses on elevating lives through healed perspectives, shared on her
website, YouTube channel, and social media show “What the Hell!”, where she shares her
journey and those of her guests.
Brandee J is the transformative force you didn’t know you needed. Her authenticity and realness
offer a breath of fresh air, creating a movement you’ll want to be a part of.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Yes! I had a successful magazine for eight years, Luxe Kurves Magazine, and during the last two years of the magazine I wanted to walk away from it. I felt as though it had ran its course. At the time I had others telling me to keep it going and I did. Knowing I was ready to walk in my purpose and do Brandee!
In 2021 during Covid, I got my wish and decided to close up shop! When I did this, I was so happy and felt free. I took the next 3 years off to focus on my mental health and my calling in life and in business. Now, I’m doing what I want and it’s the best feeling in the world! Living life and running my business on my own terms!

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the lessons I had to unlearn is everyone who wants to be a part of your business cannot, especially if they are secretly hating on you. At one point, I felt that the people around me had my back, but they did not. I had to unlearn that not everyone can be a part of your company.
