We recently connected with Portia and have shared our conversation below.
Portia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
If I could go back in time, I would have started my creative career sooner. I started my journey as a creator in April 2020. At that time, I had recently left my full-time role at a media agency, and I was back to pursuing brand ambassador roles. Shortly after, the Covid-19 pandemic took the world by storm, which led to my brand ambassador gigs to be canceled – leaving me unemployed. I had thought of starting a YouTube channel prior to the pandemic, so once I was out of work, I decided to just go for it and bring my idea to life. This then led to “That’s So Portia” YouTube channel being born on April 5, 2020.
If I had started sooner, I believe I would have experienced more growth on the YouTube platform at a faster pace. Starting sooner would have given me the opportunity to produce more consistent vlog style content because I would have been sharing my college experience with the world. While I wish I would have started sooner, I am still proud of myself for starting and I am looking forward to continuing my journey as a content creator.

Portia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those who may not know, I have a degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from North Carolina A&T State University….AGGIE PRIDE! Since college, I have worked professionally across various areas in media from television news to publishers and more. I used to watch YouTube for leisure and eventually decided that I should join the platform to share things that interests me. With my channel, “That’s So Portia,” I wanted to create a space that is informative, fun, and entertaining for viewers. On my YouTube channel, I create content around reality television reviews, fashion/style, travel, and lifestyle. When someone visits my channel, they can leave with seeing the latest Beyonce’ concert, having outfit ideas for unique occasions, learning of fun activities to do with family and friends, or world destinations to visit. I do not like to focus on one niche for my channel because I enjoy different things, so it is best to share it all because there is someone out there who will be able to resonate with at least one of my interests.
With being a formally trained and educated journalist, my journey as a content creator is different from some others. For a few creators, the biggest learning curve when starting out are filming and editing, but for me, I already knew how to do those things because I did them in my career. As a content creator, I am proud that I have gotten the chance to partner with popular brands, such as Ana Luisa. Being a small content creator and having a brand reach out to me just gives me that extra spark and push that I am doing something right and that more opportunities will be coming my way.
I want future supporters to know that “That’s So Portia,” is the go-to place for fashion, travel, and more and once they stop by my channel, they are going to love it and never leave!

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creator is knowing that the content you publish is going to help and touch people in small and big ways. When people around the world engage with my content, it is so heartwarming knowing that someone saw value in my content and learned something new and/or was entertained.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think some non-creatives struggle to understand the whole “recording yourself and things” concept and will never fully understand someone recording themselves waking up or walking into a store, and so forth. While some non-creatives find a lot of creators’ filming styles to be unrealistic, I will say that there is at least one person in the world who finds comfort in watching that, who becomes inspired by seeing that, and so much more. For me, I know that some people around do not understand the heights I can (and will) reach as a content creator, so they cannot fully grasp the concept of me sharing my travel vlogs, sharing my outfit of the day, or me sharing my experience at a winery, but I will say that your doubt or lack of support, will not hinder any growth and will allow room for genuine supporters to come. To non-creatives I will say: the creative space is actually a lot of creators’ passion space, so take the time to watch creatives’ work and I am sure you will be thoroughly surprised and will find some type of joy in their work.
