We were lucky to catch up with Lewis Landerholm recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lewis, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us about a time where you or your team really helped a customer get an amazing result?
We are currently witnessing a powerful success story in progress. Our client, a concerned parent, suspected that their child might be experiencing sexual abuse in the home of an abusive ex-spouse. The child had made alarming comments that raised red flags. Our client reported these concerns to social services, however, while the Department of Human Services (DHS) conducted an initial investigation, it was insufficient to prompt immediate action.
The situation escalated when the ex-spouse began abusing their current partner. This partner, fearing for the child’s safety, confided in our client, providing critical insight and evidence that strengthened the case. Armed with this new information, we petitioned the court for an emergency protective order.
Initially, the judge was hesitant to grant the request, but this setback prompted DHS to take the matter more seriously. DHS launched a comprehensive investigation, interviewing additional witnesses and gathering corroborating evidence that confirmed the abuse was indeed occurring.
With this evidence in hand, we returned to court and successfully secured an emergency custody order, removing the child from the dangerous environment. Coordinating closely with witnesses and ensuring every necessary step was taken, we persistently advocated for the child’s safety. In addition to this, a no-contact order was issued, allowing our client to enroll their child in much-needed counseling and begin the healing process. Additionally, a criminal investigation is now underway, ensuring that justice will be pursued.
This case highlights the importance of persistence, coordination, and leveraging the system to protect vulnerable children and hold abusers accountable.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I transitioned from a career in the corporate world to law, returning to law school later in life with a clear purpose: to start my own firm and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Our practice focuses on family law, personal injury, bankruptcy, and estate planning—areas where clients often face some of the most challenging moments of their lives. My goal is to guide them through these difficult times and help them build a better path forward. We don’t just handle cases; we care deeply about finding real solutions and helping our clients move toward a brighter future.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
For many of our clients, we are their first experience working with an attorney. Early on, we focused heavily on internet marketing to ensure we were visible to people who might not know where to turn or who to trust. Over time, we’ve expanded those efforts, leveraging tools like Facebook Live, podcasts, and a wealth of educational content to be a one-stop-shop for our clients who are looking not only for legal representation, but for education and access to other industry professionals.
Our goal is not just to share information internally but to collaborate with other professionals in our community who can address the challenges our clients face. This approach has allowed us to build strong initial connections online and, more importantly, continue providing valuable resources and education long after a client chooses to work with us. By doing so, we ensure they feel supported, informed, and empowered throughout their journey.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I’m a sports fanatic, and I draw a lot of my leadership inspiration from coaches and how they lead their team through adversity; a great example would be Rich Bisaccia. In the 2021 season, the Raiders coach resigned and they didn’t have a good start to the season. They hired Rich Bisaccia as the interim coach. When a coach has to resign mid season that’s a big deal- you’re losing your voice of the team and important leadership. When this happens, a team’s performance normally tanks, but it’s possible it can go the other way. Bisaccia took over the worst situation possible— a mid-season change over is difficult because you lose your team and your players— but he was able to turn things around. His style was one of working with the team and not dropping hammers, but rather figuring out what they wanted, in order to win the locker room. He proceeded to get them into the playoffs for the first time in many years.
Bisaccia’s leadership influenced me because it showed how effective it is to involve team players in decision making, having the right messaging, and keeping people involved appropriately. Not coming in and laying the law down, but being someone who can bring diverse individuals together to refocus on the goal and what needs to be done moving forward.
He had also never been a head coach before, so he didn’t necessarily have a style. His success was unexpected but he was able to rally the troops and got good results. I resonated with that as a new firm owner when I started my firm— I had to find my footing and it was a work in process to learn along the way. But I’ve seen through my own experiences, and through the example of people like Bisaccia, how important it is to work with your teammates for optimum outcomes, rather than simply being a task master.
