We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Latoya Murchison a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
LaToya , appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned about writing through a mix of formal education and personal exploration. In school, I grasped the fundamentals of grammar and structure, but it was through reading widely and writing regularly that I truly developed my skills. Experimenting with different genres and receiving feedback from others helped me refine my voice and technique. Over time, I realized that writing is a process that involves constant revision, patience, and a willingness to learn from mistakes. I believe the most essential skills for writing are clarity of thought, strong organization, and the ability to revise effectively. Writing requires not just good grammar, but the ability to communicate ideas in a way that resonates with the reader. Obstacles in writing can include writer’s block, self-doubt, and the difficulty of balancing creativity with structure. External distractions and time constraints can also make it challenging to focus and complete a piece.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an author, advocate, and HIV Ambassador who has made significant contributions to raising awareness about HIV, particularly in communities that are often underserved or marginalized. I am also known for my advocacy work surrounding HIV education and prevention, as well as my personal commitment to fighting stigma and promoting health equity.
One of my most notable works is my book Fighting the Good Fight: Surviving HIV, where I share my own experience with HIV, aiming to empower and inspire others who may be facing similar struggles. Through my writing, I seek to reduce the stigma surrounding HIV and encourage individuals to seek support and treatment without fear or shame.
In addition to my work as an author, I am an advocate for improving healthcare access and services for people living with HIV, and I speak out about the importance of mental health, wellness, and community support in the HIV journey.
My work has helped shift conversations about HIV in ways that focus on hope, empowerment, and resilience, rather than fear and isolation.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most important aspect of being a writer is the ability to communicate authentically and connect with readers. Whether through storytelling, education, or expression, a writer’s words must resonate on a deeper level, evoking emotion, sparking thought, or offering insight. Authenticity allows a writer to create meaningful, lasting work that reflects their unique voice, perspective, and experiences. Ultimately, it’s the power to share ideas, evoke empathy, and inspire action that makes writing such a transformative and impactful art form.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
As an HIV advocate, I have learned that the work involves more than just raising awareness about the virus—it’s about dismantling stigma, fostering education, and creating an environment of support and compassion for those living with HIV. I understand the importance of sharing accurate information to combat misconceptions, the need to emphasize prevention, testing, and treatment, and the power of storytelling in humanizing the experience of those affected. I also have realized that advocacy is a deeply personal and communal endeavor, where amplifying the voices of individuals living with HIV is key to changing public perceptions and policy. Most importantly, I have learned that HIV advocacy is about fostering hope, promoting health equity, and ensuring that no one feels isolated or ashamed because of their status. The work is ongoing and requires both compassion and perseverance, as well as a commitment to building a more inclusive and informed world.
