We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. Walter Oronsaye a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Walter, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
No defining moment for me, but the start of the pandemic made me realize the power and importance of having a platform in order to share positive and true information, especially as a healthcare professional. Lots of disinformation were being shared by unreliable sources that negatively effected people in my community. There is already a disproportionate amount of black health care professions in America and even fewer on social media. Knowing this allowed me to recognize the void that needed to be filled. I’ve worked with health agencies, and contributed to campaigns to curb misinformation and promote positive health information and this is a continuing goal of mine.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Phit Pharmacist is my social media presence where I can address different health subjects, issues and topics with a comedic satirical spin. In healthcare I was told to be stoic, and at times this is necessary but in order to truly get to patients and make change I learned that it’s easier to catch a fly with honey than vinegar, now I don’t catch flies or I don’t know if that’s how you catch flies or if even that’s the correct phrase, but I do know with my experience it’s easier and better for your patients, your colleagues and your healthcare team to be relatable in order get your message across. So this is how I chose to relay messages, talk about topics, products and issues through my personality and humor. Everyone needs a little laugh and I’m no comedian, but it works!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Social media is a confusing market to be in. Things are always changing. It’s best to remain resilient in this space and not be afraid to try new things and switch things up.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Yes. I get to help my patients directly and indirectly. Pharmacist are the most accessible health care professionals and I hold this responsibility with high regard.
