We were lucky to catch up with Amber Baker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Amber, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the best advice you ever gave to a client? How did they benefit / what was the result? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
One of the best pieces of advice that I give clients, especially those over 40+ is to focus on exercise, specifically strength training. The scientific benefits of strength training are unequivocal. Muscle is the currency of aging, especially for women in menopause and anyone taking a GLP-1 medication, which are the majority of my patients. Muscle maintains your resting metabolic rate, improves insulin sensitivity (preventing diabetes and prediabetes), lowers stress and cortisol, and improves cardiometabolic health. Exercise is also the #1 predictor of weight maintenance. As we age, we lose muscle and become less metabolically fit. Start small. Consistent work, even 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week is better than nothing. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I provide comprehensive bioidentical hormone replacement therapy for both men and women. I’ve spent the last 20 years of my career working with overweight and obese patients to help them lose weight and live healthier lives, through diet, exercise, medication, and surgery if needed.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Always be learning and open to new opportunities, learn how to do change!

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I always say that I didn’t choose bariatrics/obesity medicine, it chose me. Having my own struggles with weight and health has allowed me to relate to my patients. I initially started my nursing career in Women’s Health, but I love what I do and that way it has helped me to transform patient’s lives.
