We recently connected with Prosper Ahaneku and have shared our conversation below.
Prosper, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success means different things to different people, but there are some common qualities and actions that can make success more attainable like:
Having clear vision and goals- knowing what you want and going for it no matter what.
Being disciplined and staying consistent- working towards a set goal every day even when the motivation is not there.
Hard work and perseverance- There’s no substitute for putting in effort, you have to push through challenges and difficulties to be successful
Building strong relationships- Having strong relationships and building great networking can open certain doors to success.
In my personal life, to get to where I am today as a creator, I had to stay consistent to my craft, and worked hard because I had a set goal of reaching a certain milestone before a certain time period I.e I told myself I’ll have more than 300k subscribers on YouTube in less than a year, by staying consistent and maintaining discipline, I reached the 300k subscribers goal I set. Hard work and consistency often came with it’s own challenges, challenges that can deter you from achieving your goals like lack of motivation, low views, and some other personal life challenges. But in all, staying true and focused ultimately helps because you know you have a target and you must meet your target at all cost!

Prosper, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Prosper Ahaneku (Niklaus Prosper on all socials); I live in NYC, and I’m a YouTuber (content creator). I came into this industry about a year and half ago (November 2022). It first started as a joke honestly, because I loved skating, and I never thought I’d be creating contents around ice skating. I decided to record myself ice skating and post it on TikTok and for some reason, it went viral and that felt amazing that this much people wanted to watch me ice skate. So I decided to put out more contents and that’s how the brand started. It wasn’t until mid last year I decided to open a YouTube account and most of the people who loved watching me on TikTok also came on YouTube and in less than 6months I had over 100k subscribers. So now, I teach people how to ice skate l, roller skate or rollerblade through my YouTube channel, TikTok, and Instagram. I make tutorials on ways you can start skating and also highlighting the dangers that come with it. What I’m proud of the most is my dedication towards my craft and how I actively joyfully impact into the lives of so many who want to get into the sports. One thing most people don’t know about me is that, I am also a health care provider, of African Origin, specifically Nigeria.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I actually love telling people this!! So I’ll begin by saying I have over 250k followers on TikTok, over 350k subscribers on YouTube and over 25k followers on Instagram and I’ve only been a creator for 1year and 5 months. Now that’s not to brag but to make a point. One way I built my audience is through consistency and targeting the needs of my audience. What does that mean? It means that since the first day I started posting, I have had a set schedule for the times I post videos on all my platforms. For instance, for the first 6months, I set a goal of posting 1 video daily at 11am, and for 6months, I never missed a day. I posted at the same time every day, that way my audience know to expect a video from me at the same time everyday (i kept them engaged). And I made sure for the first 5 seconds into the video, i captured their attention either through something dramatic or something scary haha. Secondly, i read most of my comments and I knew exactly what most people were asking for and I made sure to provide them. And after the first 6 months, I set another goal of posting everyday at 11am or 3pm and I never missed a day but I interchanged between 11 and 3 most days but my audience knew to expect a video either at 11am or 3pm. The next goal i set to post 2 videos daily, one at 11am and the next at 5pm for 3 months and I did that and within 1 year my audience grew bigger. It’s not easy, because it was hard since I had to edit for all my platforms but it was worth it.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn was being angry when some of my contents didn’t perform properly or deleting videos that didn’t perform well. For the first 3 months, I was deleting videos that I thought weren’t performing well not realizing that every view is a new audience and most times just because a video never performed well the first 1 week doesn’t mean it won’t keep getting viewed. It was later on that I realized that some videos I had posted months ago that didn’t perform well, at some point just picked up and started going viral. There’s no timeline as to when something will happen, sometimes they happen!
