Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Helen Plehn. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Helen, thanks for joining us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.

My path to find and live my life purpose with joy and fulfillment took a lot of twists and turns. But the journey is worthwhile. To sum up, my career path is this: Ph.D. Student to interior designer, to Fengshui interior design business owner, to now professional artist, certified crystal healer, spiritual teacher and author.

I still remember in 2011, I was a Ph.D. Student in experience design with three academic publications on set to become a professor. From the outside world, I have a stable and reputable career with high-income and long vacations. However, deep inside me, I wasn’t happy. I had serious anxiety and depression and frequented therapist offices.

I started to ask questions like “Who am I?”, “Why am I here?”, “How can I be happy?”.

Growing up in China and moved to the U.S. in my early twenties for higher education, getting As and having a Ph.D. Seems to be the natural path. However, that little voice in me often asked me to do something more creative. I paint and design my friends’ and families’ homes as a hobby. Until one day my therapist told me, “Helen, you are a total free spirit, why are you in academia?” I went to psychiatric ER not long after that. I knew something had to change for me to feel happy again.

My healing path began when I started my 200-hour Yoga teacher training at Yoga On Main in Philadelphia (the oldest Yoga studio in town). The first time when I meditated in a group, I cried like a baby. I knew I was home. From then on, I meditated 20-minutes a day until this day. The only difference is that now can be up to 90 minutes at a time:) Meditation becomes my medication.

I had a Vedic Astrology consultation at the Yoga studio and the astrologist told me my dharma (life purpose) this life time is to CREATE. It deeply resonates with me.

I completed another Master’s degree in Interior Architecture and Design to get my architect and interior design license while working at a big architectural firm as an intern. I knew corporate wasn’t for me. Using my third-generation Fengshui master’s knowledge combining with the degree, I started my own Fengshui interior design business. Starting designing for my friends and families and through word of mouth, I gained more and more clients.

Custom artwork, pattern designs for window treatments, beddings etc. are done based on my clients’ Fengshui birth element and Kua number. During this process, I found deep joy of making art and patterns. It lights up my soul. I knew that I had to become a professional artist. I took a leap of faith and started to sell my artwork online and contacted several local galleries to show my work! They agreed! Now I am also teaching acrylic painting classes at the Sherman Library and Gardens in Newport Beach and the Huntington Beach Art Center.

I’ve never stopped my spiritual learning and practice since 2011. After my Yoga teacher training, I also get training in Ayurveda, western and Vedic astrology, became a certified crystal healer, meditation teacher, sound healer, theta healer and angelic channeler. Now I am offering holistic healing packages combining all the healing modalities I’ve had training in.

Through my 11 years of spiritual journey, I finally found my life purpose and living it with joy and fulfillment everyday. To help others do the same, I created an online spiritual course called “Flowing with Your Rainbow” and a spiritual community call the “Rainbow Soul Family” for continuous spiritual growth and support.

My business Helen Creates Beauty now offers original artwork, holistic healings, Fengshui consultation, spiritual courses and membership. Some people would say I am doing a lot. But I see them all as energy. I am just working with energy. I paint energy using colors, I bring aura colors back into balance to heal, I remove blockages of energy flow in spaces, and I teach students how to activate their rainbow aura to live their fullness.

I recently joined the Hay House publishing’s writer’s community and am writing a book with all the spiritual wisdom I’ve acquired. I’ve developed a Rainbow Aura Colorwheel to help others to find their soul gifts, heal their soul wounds, and activate their soul powers to live their purposes. It is a truth innovation with art and spirituality. I don’t know what this path will lead me, but I am excited for my new work.

There are many defining moments with my career or life path. But now I’ve learned to just go with the flow, when I take soul-aligned actions, the universe will provide its guidance. All I need to do is to have the courage and faith to take the actions.

I founded Helen Creates Beauty in 2015 offering four areas of my expertise: fine art, holistic healings (a combination of crystal, Reiki, sound, Ayurveda, Meditation, Theta Healing and Angelic Channeling), Fengshui consultation (both online and in location), and spiritual course and membership. I also published a Flowing with My Rainbow Chakra Affirmation Deck and now it is available on Amazon.

You can view my art at the Orange County Fine Arts Showcase Gallery, Huntington Beach Art Center, and the Socal Etsy Guild in the Shops of Mission Viejo. I also offer painting workshops privately and at the Sherman Library and Gardens in Newport Beach and crystal grid workshops throughout Orange County, California.

I deeply believe that at my spirit level, joy and beauty are its expressions. My ancient soul was a wise teacher and healer and my humanness ask me to lead and create. My paintings draw inspiration from all the beauties in life. Nature, light and shadow, scale and proportion, flowers, trees, crystals, garden, music, and all the memories of traveling, delicious meals, and dancing under the moon and stars. Life is about living it to its fullness, “C’est la vie”!

Meditation is another never-failing source of inspiration for my work, I am highly clairvoyant and intuitive. Often times I paint what I see in my third eye (a subtle energy center between our eyebrows). I believe creatives are channelers of the divine. Because of my spiritual journey, I see colors as energies, in fact, everything is energy. You can feel it in my use of vibrant and saturated colors, joyful objects of life, and expressive, energetic brushstrokes.

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?

I summarize the important ingredients in running a successful creative/wellness business in 4 Cs.

1. Clarity. Like with any other entrepreneurial ventures, you need to have a vision and know clearly what you want your business and your life to be. Knowing your core values and why you start this business can keep you focus what you really want and avoid decision fatigues.

2. Consistency. Showing up for yourself and your business no matter what other people think. Figure out a routine and operational system that works for you.

3. Communication and Collaborations. Key to any business. Know that sharing what you care about is caring. It is not about sales, it is about your passion. You need to share you work to the world as a generosity of spirit. Collaborations with other like-minded creatives who share your audience grows your business fast. It is a win-win situation.

4. Continuous self-growth. Leave time and space for self-evolution. You are your brand as solo entrepreneurs or business with small hiring. You are the living example of what your clients want to have. So grow with your business.
