We recently connected with Germán Medina and have shared our conversation below.
Germán , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Fortunately the name came very easy while I was still in college. The Gamut is the full spectrum of colors available in a device or display. The term was originally used in music to decribe all the notes in a musical scale. Now Gamut is synonym of spectrum, Gamut meaning the full spectrum/range within a given field. When I thought about the wedding videos I wanted to create, I knew I wanted to showcase everything: the joy, the tears, the laughs, the hugs, the whole Gamut of a wedding. I was surprised no one had used the name before!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Sure! My name is Germán Medina and I am the founder & lead cinematographer of Gamut Cine. We are the premier Wedding Cinematography company in South Florida and also do creative campaigns for businesses. I studied Filmmaking at the Escuela Nacional de Cine (National Film School) in Caracas, Venezuela, and always wanted to film weddings in a cinematic fashion. Weddings had everything a movie had: a script, itinerary, main characters, locations… but there were no proper wedding videos available. I wanted to change that. When I moved to Miami I knew that the only thig I needed was a chance to turn my camera on. I’ve been very fortunate ever since.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think that our attitude of going above & beyond for the client and to help our partners. May sound cliché, but we do not try to fight space from photographers, which is a very common feud within the industry (photo & video trying to get the best shot, or blocking the view on purpose). We stay a bit longer than what’s contracted. We recommend the people we truly believe are the best without requesting for referral fees, We edit videos for the other vendors to build a good relationship within our network. After a decade of doing what’s right, I believe we’re one of the most respected Wedding Cinematographers in the industry. If you give good energy to the world, that same energy will come back.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The biggest change in my life was to leave my home in Venezuela. That’s where I was born and raised. I began my career there and already made a good name for myself. Unfortunately, the situation in my country made it neccesary for me to leave. One of the hardest choices I’ve had to made; To begin from zero in a new country without speaking the language. But I trusted my skills. I knew that with just one chance to make a video, more business would follow. It wasn’t easy, but it sure was worth it.
