We were lucky to catch up with Fivos Vas Vassiliou recently and have shared our conversation below.
Fivos Vas, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Talk to us about building a team – did you hire quickly, how’d you recruit the first few team members? Any interesting lessons?
When I first started, it was just me. I had a strong background in video production and a passion for storytelling, much like how you got into the field. Initially, it was about hustling to get projects, relying heavily on my network and word of mouth, just as any freelancer in the creative field does. I handled everything from shooting to editing, often working late into the night to meet deadlines.
Much like your experiences, finding the right collaborators was crucial for handling more ambitious projects effectively.
I sought out collaborators who were not only skilled but also brought a unique creative flair to the table. The process of finding these individuals often relied on networking within the creative community, attending industry events, and referrals from trusted colleagues. Since our field thrives on creativity and adaptability, the selection process was less about formal interviews and more about understanding their creative vision, work ethic, and ability to mesh with the project’s goals.
I also strongly believe that the importance of delegation and specialization cannot be overstated, especially in creative industries like filmmaking. When everyone on a team focuses on their specific expertise, it not only enhances the quality of the final product but also streamlines the production process.
For example, consider the roles of an editor and a production designer in a film project. An editor has a specialized skill set that includes a deep understanding of pacing, rhythm, and the subtle nuances of storytelling through film. Similarly, a production designer brings a vision to life through the physical environment of the film. They create the setting that allows actors to fully immerse themselves in their roles and help the audience to suspend disbelief and engage with the story world.
If I were starting today, I would perhap do the whole thing alot earlier

Fivos Vas, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello! My name is Fivos, and I’m a Director of Photography and filmmaker with a passion for blending visual storytelling with innovative cinematic techniques. My journey into the film industry was driven by a deep-seated love for visual arts and storytelling, which began to take a professional shape when I started as a videographer. Over the years, I’ve honed my skills, moving from music videos and commercials to more complex narrative films, all without formal film school training. This hands-on learning process not only refined my technical abilities but also enriched my creative vision.
What sets me apart? It’s my dedication to authenticity and emotional depth. For instance, in my documentary ‘1-Up,’ I captured the poignant reflections of dancers influenced by a beloved mentor. It wasn’t just about showcasing their talents, but about delving into their personal journeys and the profound impact of their relationships. This project exemplifies my commitment to storytelling that touches viewers and invites reflection.
I am most proud of how I’ve navigated my career path without formal education in filmmaking, relying instead on Workshops, my instincts and continuous learning, and the rich experiences each project brings. This unique path has not only shaped my technical abilities but has also kept my approach fresh and my ideas innovative.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me has definitely been through networking and word-of-mouth referrals. That’s just how Cyprus works. Way more than modern social media.
Being active in the film and video production community, engaging with other professionals, and participating in industry events have all helped me build relationships that often lead to new projects. My existing clients also play a crucial role; they frequently recommend me to others, which has been invaluable.
Additionally, showcasing my work on my website and social media platforms, especially Instagram has been effective.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Absolutely, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative professional is when clients have complete trust in your vision and expertise, giving you the creative freedom to execute the project as you see fit. This level of trust not only affirms your skills and past work but also allows for a much smoother creative process without the disruption of constant revisions.
When clients step back and give you the reins, it often leads to more innovative and authentic results, as you’re able to fully immerse yourself in the creative process and bring your best ideas to life without constraint. This kind of relationship not only makes the project more enjoyable but also typically results in a final product that stands out for its creativity and originality.
