Today we’d like to introduce you to John Neral
Hi John, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My career journey began in education, a path that eventually led me to my current role as an Executive and Career Transition coach. Little did I know that the 25 years I spent in education would be the foundation for my coaching practice, allowing me to leverage a wealth of experiences and insights.
My career trajectory started in the classroom as a middle-school mathematics teacher and evolved into a series of administrative and supervisory roles, including being an instructional coach. A pivotal moment came in 2010 when I made a bold decision to leave a district I had been a part of for 14 years. This move led me to a position where I supervised 21 instructional coaches across 14 middle schools for the District of Columbia Public Schools, marking a significant shift in my career.
From there, I moved to work in assessment for D.C.’s Superintendent of Education and then to work for an educational non-profit, doing mathematics assessment content work and being their Training and Staffing Director.
Things happen in our careers. Just as we evolve in our careers, companies do, too.
When I realized it was time for me to make the biggest move of my career, I left my job as a training and staffing director to open my coaching practice full-time.
Coaching has always been a part of my professional and personal life. The support coaches provide can be an invaluable resource and tool for helping people make decisions and progress.
Today, I help mid-career professionals who feel stuck, undervalued, and underutilized SHOW UP to find a job they love or love the job they have.
In my work, I am honored to coach people from start-ups to Fortune 50 companies. I coach mid-career and mid-level leaders and executives who strive to make a difference in their organizations.
Additionally, I host “The Mid-Career GPS Podcast” to help mid-career professionals figure out whatever is next for them and their careers.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Our career journey is never linear.
There will always be struggles and obstacles, and mine is no exception.
Some of the challenges and struggles I faced in my career have included navigating organizational politics, working with difficult leaders and administrators, and managing some business relationships.
As a solopreneur, I appreciate having total control over my business and my day-to-day activities. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t challenges.
I am responsible for everything in my business, from administrative tasks to content creation, networking, and coaching my clients.
I am extremely disciplined and focused to make each day productive, but there are times when
As an executive and career transition coach, I’m always looking to connect with new people, make new business connections, network, build relationships, and wonder where my next client will come from. And I do this all while serving the current clients on my coaching roster.
There are times when the work gets extremely busy. While I love that, I have also learned how to take better care of myself so I am not easily overloaded and overwhelmed by all of the things that need to be done.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about John Neral Coaching, LLC?

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is that how we SHOW UP matters.
Whether you are an individual contributor or leading an organization, it’s imperative to SHOW UP each day and honor the values and beliefs you hold close to your heart.
Confidence is based on competence.
You can have all of the confidence in the world, but if you are leaving a trail of tears behind you because of all the people you have hurt along the way, you will never truly embrace the most important thing in any organization – its talent.
Through my own journey and my work with my clients, I define what it means to SHOW UP with six strategies. They are:
Set ground rules.
Have intentional conversations.
Own where you are.
Welcome new opportunities.
Use your genius.
Protect and promote your brand.
My SHOW UP strategies help my clients create actionable steps for how they SHOW UP for themselves, their teams, their clients, and their organizations. And when they do, they make more impact to drive more results than ever before in their careers.
