Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg And Lacy Harris
Hi Greg And Lacy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
We have always had a love for helping people from a very young age. We enjoy helping individuals who need a little extra help and TLC. Lacy became a Certified Nursing Assistant as a teenager assisting and helping those who were elderly or disabled with their everyday living activities. As for myself, I worked at a Disabilities board for adults with Special Needs as a teenager as well. While attending college, I found myself lost looking for my class room and walked down a wrong hallway. Down that wrong hallway I found a flyer advertising working with children with Special Needs. I went home and told my wife (Lacy) about it, we both interviewed and got hired. From day one, we immediately fell in love with the job. Since that one day in college Lacy and I have worked with both children and adults with disabilities in various environments such as; in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), in schools, in their homes, behavioral health hospitals, orphanages, in the community, and other environments.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Great question. We have faced several challenges, such as companies that prioritize profit over genuinely supporting individuals with disabilities and their families. These organizations often lack a commitment to creating lasting, positive change in clients and employees lives. These experiences motivated us to start our own business. After working in various places within our city that fell short in treating both clients and employees with the care they deserve, we decided to create a company that truly values our clients, their families, and our future employees.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are so proud of our business and what it stands for! At We Can Too we provide educational tutoring, life skills help, and social skills help to children and adults with special needs here in Las Vegas, NV. For each service we provide, we like to start with speaking with the parent(s) or caregiver(s) of the client to get to know the clients family and discuss with them what services they would like for us to preform and what skills they would like to see their child or loved one increase in.
When we are working on educational tutoring, we start by discussing with the clients family what educational level the client is at, assessing the clients educational level through a variety of activities, reviewing the clients Individual Education Plan (IEP), and discussing with the clients parent what they would like for the clients to learn….
We work with a lot of our clients on life skills help as well! A few life skills that some of our clients are working on include: preparing meals, shopping, laundry, cleaning, dressing, shoe tying, permit testing, and driving.
When it comes to social skills, this will vary based on the clients age and the clients ability. Our goal is to improve the way our clients interact with others. With some clients we work on learning how to start and hold conversations, while with others, we work on teaching them techniques on how to understand and respond to other people’s feelings, We also practice with clients how to behave appropriately in different social situations. This can involve activities like practicing good manners, listening to others, sharing, and playing cooperatively with friends. We do this to help our clients communicate better and build positive relationships.
What sets us apart is our care factor! We genuinely value and prioritize the well-being of our clients. We want to see each of our clients progress and have positive changes in their lives. We are attentive to each of our clients needs, showing empathy and understanding, and meet our clients where they are at and build them up from there (metaphorically).
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
At this time, we do utilize Boom Cards which includes a plethora of different academic activities. It’s easily accessible for parents to also utilize at home with their loved ones with creating a profile.
