Today we’d like to introduce you to Abhash Singh
Hi Abhash, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a kid born in a middle class household in a Tier 2 town in India, arts as a field was never an option. So much so, that our High School did not even have an Arts section, only Science and Commerce. Hence, the thought never even crossed my mind that I could even try to be a film-maker. So, the first dream was to do writing as a side-hustle. But then, eventually; watching two movies- namely Inception by Christopher Nolan and Rockstar by Imtiaz Ali changed my life forever. They made me feel like this is what I wanted to do- this is what’s the only thing that I CAN do. Henceforth, I landed up studying filmmaking in college and eventually becoming a part of the Indian film Industry.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. Not at all. But then smooth roads aren’t really fun to drive on, are they? You get lazy, fall asleep at the wheel and then have an accident. The bumpy roads are what keep you attentive; alive and are more fun. Constant failure and rejection have been almost an everyday occurrence in my journey as a filmmaker so far. Financial struggles too; have been quite crippling. But as cliche as it may sound; the idea is to not give up. Cold calls and multiple emails have resulted in some of the best opportunities that I have gotten till date.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I make films- I write, shoot and edit. But I specialize in direction. I have directed several short films, commercials and music videos; and have also worked as an Associate director and Second Unit Director for a major Hindi film titled Gaslight. The thing that I am most proud of would be a short film I made as my degree film in college titled Kashish. While it lacks the technical finesse that I can bring to a project today; I think what we got right at that point was the emotional core of the story. I am also proud of my last short film titled “Tonight’s Special” despite knowing its shortcomings.
I don’t really know what sets me apart from the others. Why don’t you watch the films I mentioned and maybe you’ll be able to tell me? I’ll link them below:

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Perseverance. Patience. Versatility. And to some extent, hope.
