Today we’d like to introduce you to Mandy Grotie
Hi Mandy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my journey as an artist in a somewhat unconventional way. Initially, I studied Physiology at the University of Minnesota, aiming for a career in medicine. After spending 10 years in Minneapolis, I moved to Portland, OR, with aspirations of being a full time artist. After a few years in Oregon, I found a job in education and decided to pursue a master’s degree in special education at Portland State University. While working as a special education teacher, I continued to pursue my true passion for creating art, always attempting to bring it into the classroom.
Over the past 15 years, my journey as an artist has been vibrant and full of life, much like my artwork. I have developed a unique style that combines bright colors, fluid lines, and a touch of humor or nostalgia. My use of color is bold and expressive, often evoking strong emotional responses. I’ve created using multiple mediums, including graphic design work, merchandise, murals, and woodworking.
Winning a Pabst Blue Ribbon design contest shortly after moving to Portland was a significant milestone. Seeing my art displayed on a downtown billboard validated my decision to pursue art and solidified my love for the city. I also had the opportunity to create art for the Portland Trailblazers, which was noted in the New York Times. These opportunities have not only provided recognition but have also inspired me to continue pushing the boundaries of my creativity.
Today, I continue to create and share my art, always striving to bring joy and positivity to others through my work. My journey as an artist has been a continuous exploration of creativity and self-expression, and I am excited to see where it takes me next.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has certainly had its bumps, but each challenge has been a valuable part of my journey as a visual artist. Balancing my passion for art with a full-time job in special education is demanding, yet it teaches me incredible time management skills and makes my creative time even more precious and fulfilling.
Financial instability and the unpredictability of art sales were indeed concerns, but always pushed me to figure it out. This financial realm led me to discover new ways to express my creativity, from graphic design to woodworking, which enriched my artistic skills.
Breaking into the art scene and gaining recognition took years of dedication and persistence. However, each small victory, from local exhibitions to larger projects, felt incredibly rewarding. The innate desire to make art motivated me to continually improve and innovate, ultimately helping me grow both personally and professionally.
Maintaining creative inspiration and motivation is another challenge, but it encourages me to seek new sources of inspiration and stay connected with the vibrant artist community around me. Living in the Pacific Northwest has given me so many places to explore for inspiration, and I am so grateful! These moments of introspection and renewal have been essential in keeping my art fresh and exciting.
Every struggle has brought with it valuable lessons and growth, making the journey all the more exciting. The passion for creating art and the joy it brings has always kept me going, and I am beyond thankful for each experience that has shaped me into the artist I am today.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Most recently, I’ve delved deeper into woodworking, which has been an exhilarating journey for me. I’ve been translating my signature bright colors and dynamic forms onto wall pieces and coffee tables, exploring the realm of functional art. This exploration has added a new dimension to my artistic expression.
I specialize in graphic design, creating vibrant murals, and crafting whimsical illustrations. These mediums allow me to play with color and form in unique ways, infusing each piece with my distinctive style and humor. I’m known for my bold use of bright colors that pop off the canvas or wall, coupled with a touch of humor that brings joy to viewers. Whether it’s a mural brightening up a city street or an illustration that tells a whimsical story, my work aims to evoke smiles and intrigue.
I’m most proud of my continuous growth as an artist. Each new project, whether it’s a graphic design commission, a mural in a public space, or a piece of functional art, challenges me to innovate and evolve. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how my art resonates with people and how it evolves with each new endeavor.
Any big plans?
My plans for the future always revolve around creating. I aim to produce larger pieces that can be showcased in galleries and to paint more large scale murals. My ultimate goal is to bring smiles and laughter to more people through my artwork.
Every year brings new opportunities to exhibit my work, and I’m continually excited to see what lies ahead. As an artist, I’m genuinely content with how my artistic journey has unfolded and feel that it authentically represents who I am.
