Today we’d like to introduce you to Art Paul Schlosser

Hi Art Paul, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?

I was brought up on the Beatles, The Monkees and Comedy and was told by my sisters I could not sing but when I discovered a Rolling Stone record I felt if McJagger could sing why can’t I. When I got older I was in a summer work program that taught us how to be actors and encouraged us to write in our journals. All of us in the group became good friends and sometimes we would pretend to be the Beatles. One friend of mine suggested I write some lyrics.I wrote some he said they were bad but I continues to write anyhow and after I had a class on Edger Allen Poe I caught onto rhyme and rhythm. Around this time or so I asked my Mom for a guitar for my birthday and began to learn and make up songs. But I didn’t start playing live until I was out of a job when I turn 26 and I saw you play your guitar on State street and get money. At first I did cover songs but then someone had me open for them and said play only covers. So I did and after the gig people asked me to play my covers on the street. So I did and made some cassette tapes and people started to buy them and later when CDs came out I sold CDs and sent one to Sly in the Morning and he started playing me on his radio show and I also sent some to Dr Demento and he started playing me.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?

My life as been very fun and easy since I choose to be a street musician. however every now and then there are problems performing on the street because if you’re not careful some kid might grab the money out of your case or sometimes you’re judged by some people who think street performers and buskers are the same as panhandlers. But mostly it’s better than having to be a janitor or a construction worker. and sometimes they film me and I get more famous and get invited places.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?

I am both a street musician and an artist. I play these types of songs: Funny, Serious and Gospel The music can be folk , country, rock n roll or punk and or rap.

My artwork is abstract expression or flowers or religious. I use acrylic on recycled canvas but I also do color pencil drawings and water color paintings

What do you like and dislike about the city?

What I like best about your city is the fact that you are interested in my music and art. I do not know anything bad about your city
