Today we’d like to introduce you to Amit Sounds
Hi Amit, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hello,
My name is Amit, I’m a producer, songwriter, and mix engineer from Seattle, WA.
My journey with music started at about 12 years old, I picked up a friend’s guitar and learned how to play “Smoke on the Water” and felt like a rockstar, since that day I kept playing and getting better, 4-6 hours every day.
I was always fascinated with songwriting, and music theory and always learned the key elements of what makes a song.
After graduating from BPM College of Music, I started as an intern, and then engineer at London Bridge Studios, eventually starting my own production space.
My biggest passion was always for production and the process of making songs reach their fullest potential, so I always focused on growing there, I built my own studio and started working with singer/ songwriters, bands, artists, and musicians.
Today, I work full-time as a producer, and I love every minute of it!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Anything worth having is never an easy road.
The music industry is challenging and requires you to work very hard.
I think the biggest struggle for me (and many people who do music professionally) is turning this hobby into a career, you have to learn how to run it like a business, which is a completely different skill, but it is essential.
You’ll find many people who are not as driven as you, many scammers, and many people who’ll make you reconsider doing music at all.
You have to push through and keep creating.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
A producer has so many different job descriptions.
My job is to use my skills, knowledge, and experience to help people I work with reach their goals, whether it’s making a record, establishing an artist brand, mixing & mastering their records, or just engineering a recording session.
The thing that I focus on when working with my artists is to enhance their vision, when I hear a demo/ idea an artist wrote, I can easily produce it to my music taste, but the key is to be able to connect to the artist’s vision, understand what they want/ how they want it, and to deliver, just like they hear it in their head.
I do that by having many conversations, listening to a bunch of music, and a lot of trial & error.
I understand that in the bottom line, my job is to serve, support, and help, there’s no place for ego in the game.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Absolutely.
When Covid started back in 2020 it was a very rough time for the music industry, many of us lost work, gigs, events, etc.
I think the biggest lesson I learned is that no matter what, you have to learn to be flexible and adapt to changes that might be in your control or not, that is the only way you can sustainably do anything.
Shit happens, we can either complain and play victim, or accept, learn, adapt, and grow.
Covid was an important lesson in my life, and I’m glad I had it.
