Today we’d like to introduce you to Peyton Mcelvy
Hi Peyton, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Thank you for having me again. As some may know from reading my last interview, I was very young when I took to art passionately. Even my childhood dream was one of a professional artist. That’s where the fuel for my business began, and I continued to explore deeper into my artistic skills & expressions. Along with my drawings, I also explored a lot of self-expression. My style and belief set me very apart from others. Of course, this came with the cons of being judged & misunderstood, but it gave me more color to paint my future with!
My teen years were full of the peer pressures & discovering who I am, visions, and spiritual ventures that bolstered the intentions I put into my art today.
As stated previously: This is why you will find I offer a lot of pieces that are original, culturally-inspired, and include a lot of subjects on ethnicity, sexuality, identity, body positivity, and the like. I also use my creativity and unique expressiveness in modeling, reaching out more with these ideals and connecting my art to it as well.
Seeing a world where yeses and nos can both exist fluidly is what I dream of.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have most definitely been challenges, the road in no way being perfectly smooth.
I think some of these that stand out would be finding my audience, balancing with my personal life, and finding a consistent medium that’s right for me.
However, always approaching life with a sense of learning & exploration has made it much more fun to ride the ups and downs of this hilly road.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My creativity mainly consists of canvas art & paintings, jewelry & beaded accessories, and tattoo design.
I specialize in inclusive, story-telling paintings, mostly done in an abstract & androgynous style. The majority of my jewelry is beaded, but I also work with threads and other mediums, as I enjoy incorporating mixed supplies for maximum originality. Thirdly, my tattoo design is VERY open stylistically (however, I will mention that while I am capable of realism, I would not say I specialize/excel in that aspect).
I am also well known for my modelling, as I have been incorporating that facet more and more into my repertoire. My identity is non-binary (pronouns: he/she/they), and I love to sport nearly any style ranging through both the masculine and feminine sides! Just a few of my accomplishments include New York Fashion Week, DC Fashion Week, and several publications. This side of my work can also be found and contracted through my website.
Something that makes me most proud of my talents/offerings is the fact that it does set me apart from others. I always strive to be genuine, inspiring, inclusive, and loving in everything I do, even if that sacrifices “big opportunities for business or fame.” This is because one of my biggest beliefs is that community is where it all starts, and if you cannot be honest and true to yourself, you cannot institute that community.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Hmmm, well, there’s not much the outside world doesn’t know about me as I live a pretty open-book life in that sense. A few fun facts some may not know though, are the following:
– I was once a weight-lifter and parkour athlete/trainer (I can still pull most of the moves I used to! :D )
– I’m an extreme lover of languages, always dabbling in a new one here and there (Spanish being my most fluent outside of English)
– One of my several hobbies includes making personal fashion pieces!
