Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Christin Johnson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Christin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The mission of Thee Style Editor is to empower women through wardrobe and fashion styling, enhancing their confidence by elevating their personal style and helping them embrace their uniqueness.
The story behind my mission is MY own personal journey being a curvy girl. Since a little I always (here comes the corny) had a passion for fashion lol. Growing up It was difficult trying to identify my personal style. Society was putting plus size women in a box to conform to what they deemed was acceptable fashion.
It wasn’t until I discovered my style in college that I learned that I didn’t have to follow the standards of plus size fashion… I can follow my own trends by understanding my uniqueness and feel confident in my own skin.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m thrilled to share a bit about myself with readers! I’m a fashion stylist, digital creator, and co-host, with a strong passion for curating looks that embrace and celebrate the beauty in every shape and size. My journey in fashion started in sales in 2010 at American Apparel, where I worked closely with clients to help them feel confident and empowered through their style choices. Women were amazed to see me working there because AA didn’t advertise much that they carried extended sizes, women would just stumble across me complimenting my many outfits and then realized I was an employee! My time there allowed me to connect on a deeper level with people seeking fashion guidance, and it ignited my drive to make styling a full-time career. Shortly after, I decided to enroll in The Fashion Institute of Technology located in New York, NY.
In addition to personal styling, I create fashion content aimed at inspiring women—especially curvy women—by showing them how to navigate trends while staying true to their unique selves. I also am a Digital Marketer which gives me a creative edge in connecting with audiences online.
What sets me apart is my commitment to understanding each client’s lifestyle and self-expression goals. I don’t just offer clothes; I offer confidence, helping women feel bold, beautiful, and celebrated. I’m also proud of my background as a fashion writer for Modern Stitches, where I learned to blend storytelling with style, and this perspective shapes everything I do today.
My goal is to create a supportive community and empower women to embrace their personal style with confidence. To anyone looking to elevate their look or just get inspired, I’m here to help make that journey a stylish and joyful experience!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building my social media audience has been a journey of authenticity, consistency, and community. I started by sharing looks and styling tips that truly reflected who I am and what I stand for: confidence, boldness, and self-love, especially as a curvy woman in an industry that sometimes overlooks us.
I believe the key to growing an audience is to bring genuine value. I wasn’t just posting outfits; I was creating a space where people could find inspiration, advice, and feel supported. I also connect with my community on a personal level, sharing parts of my life as a mom and my journey in the fashion industry, which helped people see the real person behind the content.
For those just starting, my advice would be to stay true to yourself and understand that building a presence takes time. Consistency is essential, but so is focusing on quality over quantity. Engage with your audience, ask them what they want to see, and show genuine interest in them. And remember: it’s okay to start small. Every follower is a person who values what you bring to the table. Be patient, stay authentic, and never lose sight of your “why.”
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Absolutely! One thing I think non-creatives may struggle to understand is the amount of vulnerability and persistence required in a creative career. Creating is deeply personal, and putting that creativity out there can feel like exposing a part of yourself to the world. It’s about taking risks, opening up to criticism, and learning to stay resilient when things don’t go as planned.
As a stylist and content creator, I’m constantly putting my ideas, style, and personality on display. People may see a polished image on social media, but behind that image is a lot of hard work, from brainstorming concepts to finding the right pieces, editing, and often reworking an idea multiple times to get it right. It’s easy to see the final result and think it’s effortless, but creativity involves a lot of trial and error and late nights of planning, especially when you’re balancing multiple roles, like I do as a mom, daughter, sister and friend.
What I’d love non-creatives to understand is that being a creative isn’t just a job—it’s a passion that requires resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to put yourself out there. Don’t get me wrong it’s rewarding and I love it but it also demands a lot of emotional energy. So, if you’re supporting a creative in your life, encourage them to keep going, even on the hard days.
