Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Malissa Sanfilippo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Malissa, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The mission behind my work drives every aspect of what I do. My mission is to create edible art that is beautiful and delicious. I was fortunate to have graduated from the University of Southern California’s Roski School of Fine Art. During my time at USC I took advantage of one of the programs offered to all art majors (I actually double majored in art and Italian), the opportunity to spend a year abroad in Italy. Since I was a fine art and Italian major, it seemed like the right thing to do. So off I went and it was literally the experience of a lifetime. My interest and love of art grew as did my love of all things Italian. Upon arriving back in San Diego I met and married the love of my life who as luck would have it is Italian! We traveled the US as he was a professional soccer player. Every city was an adventure. It was at this time that I developed a love of baking as I trained and worked in several high end bakeries. Following my husband’s retirement, we came back home to San Diego. At this point, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I made the decision to go into business for myself, marrying my passion for art with my love of baking, and this is when Violet Cake Co. was born. An artist at heart, I love what I do and my goal is to express myself through my art and create something that my customers will always remember.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Malissa Sanfilippo. I was born and raised in San Diego, California. Ever since I can remember I have been a student and lover of art. Several things led me to opening up my own bakery, semesters abroad in Italy studying art and working as a trainee for some of the most renowned cake artists/experts in my field. I was convinced that I could combine my passion for art with my love of baking. I love to make gorgeous, custom designed wedding cakes and celebration cakes. I have an art degree from the USC Roski School of Fine Art and I consider each cake I do to be one of my masterpieces. These are the things I am most proud of in my career. I would want my clients all to know that each cake is a blank canvas for me and my goal is to create the cake of their dreams, something that they will always cherish and remember.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me by far is Google. Google advertising in my opinion gives you the best bang for your buck. There are tons of other sources and I’ve tried them all. Google ranks as number 1.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I don’t really have a cofounder or business partner as I am the sole owner of my business.
However, I do have a marketing and bakery manager who does all the clerical work for me.
I met her a long, long time ago. My manager is my mom!
