We recently connected with Twinkle Zaman and have shared our conversation below.
Twinkle, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project would be probably be the novel I recently finished writing. My book ‘Love Notes’ means a lot to me as well. So much went into both. I think the novel was difficult for me for a lot of reasons. I’ve never written a whole story, I’ve never had to pitch before, I really had no idea what this process would be like. It’s more than just telling a story. You want others to believe in it as much as you do. I always knew the storyline and the concept but getting it down was much harder than I imagined. You hear people who have written like twenty novels and I’m just like ‘how’! It takes you through so much. It’s a brand new experience for me and I am excited for what’s to come. It was a lot of hard work…still a lot of hard work. It means so much to me and I feel really protective over it.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started writing when I was about nine years old. It started out as journaling. For a time period I remember carrying a journal with me everywhere I went. I remember one day I was at a babysitters house and I was writing. Her husband took my journal and wanted to read it. I was so embarrassed I never took it anywhere again and it strictly became a secret thing. I wasn’t writing fairytales in there. I always felt older as a child and it was lonely most of the time. I had friends but their lives seemed so fun and bubbly. I eventually stopped writing going into my teens because I started falling in love with sports and that kept me busy. Fast forward to early college years I found myself going back to that place of journaling. Still secretly! It was different than my childhood experience. I felt inspired and I felt there was some sort of purpose behind it all. Initially I didn’t write to share any of it with the world but it’s something my heart kept telling me to do. I just took a deep breath and basically said ‘here goes nothing’
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think creative people are sensitive and emotional beings. A lot of the times because you’ve put something out to the public the emotional aspect is completely torn away from it. At that point it’s just a product. I’ve learned telling a story and selling a story are two different things. At some point you also have to start thinking that way, but that’s what makes me different. I truly try to stay true to what I believe.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
You know I had a whole different answer for this, but I’ll be honest and say what I really want to say. I’ve never witnessed great love…in real life. It seemed to be this pattern everywhere I looked. You know you can look at people and know the kind of ‘love’ they are in. I’m not naïve or oblivious to the realities of life. It’s never going to be perfect. I wrote my book in hopes to reach for the kind of love that I know must exist. I hope it inspires people to look for that kind of magic. I’m so passionate about this topic and just a believer in love. That’s been such a driving force as cliche as it sounds.
