We recently connected with Melvin Rodriguez Echevarria and have shared our conversation below.
Melvin, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Taking risks is an inherent part of life, and as a realtor, I understand that buying, selling, or moving to a new home can feel like one of the biggest risks a person can take. It’s not just a financial decision but an emotional one too—your home is where you create memories, build your life, and find comfort.
However, I firmly believe that with the right guidance and support, this “risk” can transform into an incredible opportunity. My role is to provide my clients with the knowledge, resources, and confidence they need to make informed decisions. Whether it’s pricing a home correctly for the market, negotiating terms, or helping someone navigate the unknowns of a new neighborhood, the key is preparation and partnership.
Taking that leap into the next chapter of your life is always easier when you know you’re not doing it alone. My goal is to make the process smooth, successful, and ultimately rewarding—because taking a risk, with the right support, often leads to the greatest rewards.

Melvin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Thirty years ago, I moved to Miami from Puerto Rico to pursue a master’s degree in chemistry and become a chemistry instructor for undergraduate students at the University of Miami. As fulfilling as a career in education is, it is also unfortunately one of the least lucrative. To make ends meet, life took me to another passion of mine: luxury retail. This change offered me a new challenge and the opportunity to grow in an entirely different arena. It was a great opportunity to shape, mentor, and uplift the lives of my team. It was so fulfilling to create an environment where the team is inspired and motivated to make customers’ dreams a reality. During that stage of my life, I was very excited and honored to manage businesses for designers of the caliber of Brunello Cuccinelli, Jimmy Choo, and Carolina Herrera.
After 30 years of living in South Florida, I really experienced what a fantastic place to live is. Between the warm weather, amazing beaches, diverse and vibrant culture, outdoor lifestyle year around, and thriving Art and Entertainment scene, I could not ask for a better place to live. And this is what took me to my most recent endeavor: Real Estate. I myself have been a Real Estate client many times as a seller, buyer, investor, and landlord. I also know firsthand how stressful, and despairing can any real estate process be if the dedication, consistency, follow-up, and energy needed are not put in to achieve the goals desired. For the last few years, I have been making the dreams of living in South Florida a reality as a realtor for the biggest brokerage firm in the country, Keller Williams. It is now my opportunity to share all my knowledge and passion with those who want to enjoy this Paradise as I did 30 years ago.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Growing my clientele as a realtor has always been about more than just transactions—it’s about building trust and lasting relationships. I believe success in this field comes from a mixture of deep knowledge, honesty, empathy, and truly putting yourself in someone else’s shoes.
Knowledge is foundational. Clients rely on me to understand the market, trends, and processes inside and out. When I demonstrate expertise, they feel confident that they’re in capable hands. But expertise alone isn’t enough—honesty is just as critical. I make it a priority to provide clear, straightforward advice, even if it means delivering tough truths. Clients respect transparency and appreciate knowing I have their best interests at heart.
Empathy ties it all together. Moving, buying, or selling a home is a deeply personal experience. By actively listening and putting myself in their shoes, I can understand their goals, fears, and dreams. This perspective allows me to provide tailored solutions that meet their unique needs.
Ultimately, this approach not only helps me grow my business but also builds long-lasting relationships. Clients recognize the authenticity in how I operate and often refer me to friends and family because they know I’ll bring the same level of care and commitment to them. It’s a cycle of trust and service that fuels sustainable growth.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Building a reputation based on doing what is right instead of what is easy is at the core of my philosophy as a realtor. In this profession, it’s tempting to take shortcuts or prioritize speed over integrity, but I’ve learned that long-term success comes from consistently choosing the harder, but more ethical, path.
For me, doing what’s right means putting my clients’ needs above all else, even when it’s inconvenient or requires more time and effort. It’s advising a seller to make necessary repairs before listing, even if it delays the process, because I know it will help them get the best return. It’s steering a buyer away from a property that doesn’t truly meet their needs, even if it means waiting longer for a commission.
These decisions aren’t always easy, but they build trust, and trust is invaluable. When clients know you’ll advocate for them, no matter the circumstances, they see you as more than just a professional—they see you as a partner in their journey. That reputation for doing what’s right creates a ripple effect, bringing referrals, repeat business, and a sense of pride in knowing that your work makes a meaningful impact.
