We were lucky to catch up with Gabriel Hays recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Gabriel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
As with any career in the arts, learning never stops. I’ve reached this point by continually seeking out new information, teachers, and collaborators.
Mastery takes consistent effort over time, and staying consistent allows growth to happen—often more than you realize. The most essential skills, in my experience, are tenacity and resilience.
One of the biggest obstacles to learning was assuming I knew something before I truly did. I’ve found that the more I’m willing to recognize what needs improvement, the faster I can grow.

Gabriel , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Gabriel Hays, a composer, songwriter and producer.
My journey began in Santa Fe, NM where I fell in love with music and cinema. I moved to Los Angels in 2012 after having spent the previous decade in NYC being immersed in the vibrant Brooklyn music scenes of the 2000s.
I’ve worked on shows like the Smurfs and Star Wars: Galactic Pals as well the Netflix movie Secret Magic Control Agency among many others.
I got my start in film scoring in Los Angeles working as an assistant and arranger at Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Doing the work!

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I found Rick Rubin’s book ‘The Creative Act: A Way of Being’ to be very insightful and inspiring. It talks about creativity from a very supportive and earnest perspective. So many of the lessons rang true for me.
