We recently connected with Minoe and have shared our conversation below.
MINOE, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My own music means a lot to me, but lately I’ve been really happy writing for other artists. It means so much to be able to help someone translate their thoughts and emotion into a song they truly love. It feels really fulfilling to me.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m MINOE I’m an artist/songwriter/producer from Montreal, Canada. As an artist my music mainly focuses on my own experiences with self-doubt, queerness, and disassociation – I love happy/sad combos! As a songwriter I’ve been working with a long list of labels and indie artists. I also work part time as a grant writer and social media manager for a few labels as well.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think we need to deconstruct the idea of the “artist” and we should be more honest and transparent about what that job means. There are so many misconceptions about how the industry works and I think that allows people to A: be very harsh on artists and B: get away with a lot of shady stuff within our industry. Every song you hear on the radio has a large team behind it, and a lot of those people are barely making any money from music. The artist may not have even been in the room for a lot of these decisions, then has to deal with all the negativity online. On top of that, the artist is considered to be in a privileged or enviable position, but from what I’ve seen, it’s rarely the case. The dream of being a pop star can very quickly turn into a nightmare, and I hope we can change our industry so it doesn’t have to be this way anymore. It’s about time!
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew as a little girl that there are many ways to have a creative career in music outside of being a pop star. But I’m learning that now. I also wish I knew a little earlier that I can create my own opportunities and I don’t need to beg – in fact, begging never works anyway! Make the party and people will come
