We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Vanity Scott a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Vanity, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I am a 6x children’s book author that creates stories that focus on social emotional learning, self-discovery, and community. I own Emherge Press, my publishing company that I publish my books through as well as provide 1:1 consultations for aspiring children’s book authors.
When I started my journey as a published author in 2020, I was turning my grief into purpose. I wrote my first book, A Girl and Her Grandpa, in dedication of my late grandfather. Since then, I have dedicated my journey to learning as much as I can about being an author and business owner. I have immersed myself in the social emotional learning world for children, and each of my children’s books have elements of it in each. I plan to continue this journey to help children identify, regulate, and celebrate their emotions through self-discovery and community.
I am so proud of my 6 published children’s books- Jumping Beanie & The Mustard Seed, A Girl and Her Grandma, A Boy and His Grandma, A Girl and Her Grandpa, A Boy and His Grandpa, and A Crown Like Mine, all of which are available on Amazon!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As I mentioned before, I am a 6x children’s book author that creates stories that focus on social emotional learning, self-discovery, and community. I own Emherge Press, my publishing company that I publish my books through as well as provide 1:1 consultations for aspiring children’s book authors.
As I fully immerse myself in the social emotional learning space, I am most proud that I create children’s books not only for kids, but the kid inside of all us. These stories have spoken deeply to multiple age groups and that is very special to me.
I also have a passion for helping aspiring children’s book authors get their book ideas out of their minds and to the people that need them. Through my 1:1 consultations, I help them build a plan that will get their projects across the finish line. I plan to launch an author coaching program in 2025.
Have you ever had to pivot?
As an entrepreneur, a lesson that you quickly learn is when and how you need to pivot. As a children’s book author, I am very creative. I almost always have a new book idea immediately after I finish a book launch. I have gotten illustrations done for books I have not published, because during my journey, I have learned where to focus my energy and branding.
I took a pivot from those books to others that better serve my audience at this current time. The ideas are great, but I had to ask myself, are these ideas in line with where you are trying to take your brand? The answer was either no or not yet. Pivoting requires lots of patience, grace, and discernment.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the notion that every product on the market is perfect. Sometimes you can have imposter syndrome when you look at other people doing what you aspire to do. Everything can seem so well thought out and executed. While a lot of it is, I realized by talking to other founders that everything starts as an idea and that idea is constantly refined over time.
Now as an entrepreneur myself, I realize that there is such beauty in the building phase. Building something is truly special, whether it is children’s books or other types of products, and the magic is in the testimony. The testimony can only be pieced together through the imperfect and gritty refining process.
