Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
One of the biggest risks I’ve taken was starting my own digital marketing business, Nicole Martin Digital. It wasn’t a decision I made lightly—I had a secure job with consistent income, and stepping out on my own meant leaving behind the safety net that came with it. The idea of building something from the ground up was both exhilarating and terrifying.
The backstory is simple: I’ve always been passionate about helping small businesses grow. Over the years, I noticed a recurring theme—many small business owners, especially wellness professionals, were struggling to manage their online presence while juggling the demands of running their businesses. I realized there was a real need for someone who could step in and handle social media and digital marketing in a way that aligned with their brand voice and vision. It was this realization that sparked my desire to take the leap.
I spent months preparing—building my knowledge base, refining my skills, and planning how I could offer services that genuinely made a difference. But no amount of preparation could erase the uncertainty of leaving a steady paycheck behind. The first few months were tough. I had to wear so many hats—marketer, accountant, strategist—all while trying to build a client base and prove my value in an industry full of competition.
Despite the challenges, the risk paid off in ways I couldn’t have imagined. I started working with incredible small business owners who trusted me to help their businesses grow. I’ve been able to build authentic relationships with my clients, focusing on their unique goals and creating strategies tailored to their needs. What’s most rewarding is seeing the tangible results of our efforts—whether it’s a client gaining more leads or finally feeling confident about their social media presence.
Taking this risk taught me that the biggest leaps often come with the greatest rewards. Absolutely! What started as a side hustle has now grown into my full-time business and passion. I originally began managing social media and digital marketing on the side while working a full-time job. I was helping a few small businesses here and there, creating content and running their social accounts because I loved the creative process and the opportunity to help businesses connect with their audiences in meaningful ways.
The turning point came when I realized just how much demand there was for these services, especially from small business owners and wellness professionals who didn’t have the time, resources, or expertise to effectively manage their digital presence. One client turned into two, then three, and soon I was spending every spare moment after work building strategies, creating content, and learning the ins and outs of digital marketing. I realized I had found something that not only excited me but also allowed me to make a tangible difference for others.
Scaling up came with its own challenges, but I approached it step by step. One of the key milestones was landing my first long-term client—a small wellness business that saw significant growth through the strategies we implemented. That success gave me the confidence to take on more clients and eventually make the leap to running Nicole Martin Digital full time. Another major milestone was when I started to diversify my offerings, adding consulting, Google Ads management, and downloadable guides to help small businesses that weren’t quite ready for full-service management.
Looking back, the biggest milestones were rooted in trust—clients trusting me to handle their digital presence and me trusting myself to take the leap, invest in my skills, and scale the business. What started as a passion project has grown into a business I’m incredibly proud of, one that allows me to work with amazing clients and help them achieve their goals. It’s been a journey of hard work, adaptability, and unwavering belief in the value of what I offer, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe my reputation within my market has been built on three key pillars: trust, tailored solutions, and authenticity.
